Lok Sabha polls: In break from tradition, BJP goes without celebrity from Gurdaspur | Elections News

Going against history, the BJP has given ticket to a regular politician and its former MLA, Dinesh Singh Babbu, from Gurdaspur seat for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The BJP hasn’t won Gurdaspur even once without the power of stardom. The party had strong reasons to field a parachute candidate, Sunny Deol, from Gurdaspur in 2019 polls, as its experiment with fielding local leaders was never successful. Bollywood star Vinod Khanna was the first to win the border seat touching Pakistan for the BJP in 1998, with a margin of 1,06,833 votes in alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Before the parachute candidate (Vinod Khanna) landed here, Congress leader Sukhbuns Kaur Bhinder had won the Gurdaspur seat five times in a row. Just two years before Khanna registered the first victory for the BJP, Bhinder had defeated BJP’s Jagdish Sawhney with a wide margin of 74,547 votes in 1996. Later, she was defeated by Vinod Khanna three times in a row. Khanna was finally defeated in 2009 by Congress candidate Partap Singh Bajwa with 8,342 …

The years that saw two Dravidian majors becoming Tamil Nadu’s principal players

Since 1977, the DMK and the AIADMK have remained the dominant forces in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, solidifying their positions as the primary players. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu The decade starting from 1967 marked a pivotal moment for Tamil Nadu, as it witnessed the rise of two significant Dravidian parties: the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Since 1977, these two parties have remained the dominant forces in the State’s political landscape, solidifying their positions as the primary players in Tamil Nadu’s political arena. In the 1967 Lok Sabha election held in the State along with the Assembly poll,  the DMK-led United Front (UF), consisting of Swatantra, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Muslim League, took on the then ruling Congress. Interestingly, the DMK founder C.N. Annadurai, who tasted defeat in Kancheepuram in the 1962 Assembly election,  preferred to contest from the South Madras Lok Sabha constituency five years later, despite being the head of the DMK and the front.  Even though he won, he …
