Porbandar Congress MLA Arjun Modhwadia Thursday said in the Assembly that the state government should develop Porbandar – the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi – as an iconic and world-class destination, similar to Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.
“Sabarmati Ashram is being developed… similarly, Porbandar, should also be developed as an iconic and world-class (place) because (many visitors)… from other countries come there (Porbandar) and they get disappointed,” Modhwadia said.
Sabarmati Ashram was set up by Gandhi on the banks of Sabarmati river. He stayed at the ashram between 1917 and 1930.
Meanwhile, opposing the Budget, Modhwadia said, “Our spending on rural development is the lowest, just 2.9 per cent of the total Budget. It is indeed because of this that people from villages are rushing to the cities.”
