Shah Rukh Khan’s mansion in Mumbai, Mannat, is a major landmark of the city. Fans from all over the world visit SRK’s house and get a picture clicked in front of the nameplate. A sea of people gathers on the streets when SRK is scheduled to make an appearance on his balcony. But, years before he bought this place, Shah Rukh was once shooed away by the guards of that house. Choreographer Ahmed Khan recalled the shoot of the film Yes Boss and shared that they shot the song ‘Chand Taare’ outside Mannat, which had another name at the time and the guards of the mansion asked them to leave.
In a chat with Lehren Retro, Ahmed recalled that a part of the song was supposed to be shot outside the house. “We were shooting ‘Chand Taare’ outside Mannat and the watchman shooed us away. There’s a shot of a Parsi couple driving and Shah Rukh jumps on the car. We took that shot and the watchman shooed us,” he recalled and shared that at this point, SRK joked about buying the house.
“Shah Rukh jokingly said, ‘Khareed lu kya? Fir shot lenge. (Shall I buy it? We’ll able to shoot then.)’ He told the entire unit, ‘Yeh khareed lu kya? (Shall I buy it?)’ It wasn’t called Mannat then. He said let me buy this and then we will be able to do our shot. He said it jokingly but his words came true. And he bought that place,” Ahmed shared.
Shah Rukh bought this property in 2001 for Rs 13.01 crore. As of December 2024, the estimated value of the property is Rs 200 crore. During the launch of Gauri’s Khan book My Life in Design, Shah Rukh shared with the media that Gauri decided to design the house because they did not have enough money to hire a designer, and they had already spent a lot of money in buying and renovating the house. “We did not have too much money. As soon as we mustered up some money, we said we have to buy a bungalow. We managed to buy, which was one thing, but then we had to rebuild it because it was kind of broken. And then we didn’t have money to furnish it,” he said.
SRK’s house is set to undergo a renovation. The actor and his family will be moving out of the house, which is a Grade III heritage building, for two years and will be temporarily moving into a four-floor apartment in Bandra.
