Party president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed Sapkal as the President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect. In an official statement, AICC General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal said, “Congress President has appointed Shri Harshwardhan Sapkal as the President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing President, Shri Nana Patole.” Harshwardhan Sapkal served as an MLA from 2014 to 2019, representing the Buldhana Assembly Constituency in Maharashtra. Siddharth Hattiambire, President of the Scheduled Castes Division of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, has demanded a judicial inquiry into Sonmanth Suryavanshi`s death and called for strict action against the responsible cops, an official statement said on Wednesday. He has also demanded that a murder case should be filed against the police officials. Hattiambire stated that if the government does not provide justice to Suryavanshi and Vijay Wakode families, millions of followers of Dr. BR Ambedkar will protest at the state secretariat on March 3 and a letter in this regard has also be written to Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, the statement said. The incident had occurred in Maharashtra`s Parbhani during a protest. New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday convicted Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in a case over the murders of two persons in Saraswati Vihar area during the anti-Sikh riots. Special judge Kaveri Baweja passed the conviction order and posted the arguments on sentence on Feburary 18. Kumar was produced before court from Tihar jail for the pronouncement. The case relates to the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984. Though Punjabi Bagh police station registered the case initially, a special investigation team later took over the investigation. On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar, finding a “prima facie” case against him. According to the prosecution, a huge mob, armed with deadly weapons, resorted to large-scale looting, arson and destruction of properties of Sikhs to avenge the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The mob attacked the house of the complainant, Jaswant’s wife, killing her husband and son apart from looting articles and setting their house ablaze, alleged the prosecution. Senior Congress leader and CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday asked the government to complete a population census at the earliest, claiming that the people in the country are being deprived of the benefits under the food security law.  In her maiden Zero Hour intervention in the Rajya Sabha, Gandhi said beneficiaries under the NFSA are being identified as per the 2011 Census, and not the latest population numbers.
