The Congress leadership has decided to resolve issues related to mounting debts of deceased party functionary N.M. Vijayan. After Vijayan’s family members were reportedly denied permission to meet Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday (May 4), they told the media that party leaders who had earlier offered all support to them had not done anything more than releasing a sum of ₹10 lakh. Vijayan and his son Jijesh had died in December last year following an alleged suicide attempt. Vijayan reportedly incurred debts following a fund-raising programme for the party. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Congress’s former Haryana MLA Dharam Singh Chhoker from a five-star hotel in New Delhi Monday morning in connection with an alleged money laundering scam worth Rs 1,500 crore. A few weeks ago, the agency had attached his assets amounting to Rs 44.55 crore. Chhoker is a close aide of former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The case pertains to alleged irregularities in the allotment of flats, houses, and plots by his real estate companies in Gurgaon. The former MLA and his firms allegedly amassed over Rs 616 crore from investors but failed to deliver the allotments. Chhoker and his sons Sikander and Vikas are being investigated in the case. In March, the ED had issued a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and attached about three acres of agricultural land, 2,487 sq m of commercial plots, and eight residential flats located in Delhi, Faridabad, and Panipat in connection with the case.
