Delhi-NCR likely to see week-long spell of rain and thunderstorms, says IMD

Delhi-NCR is expected to witness a week of rainfall and thunderstorm activity, bringing continued relief from intense summer heat, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather department has forecast that maximum temperatures across the national capital will remain below the 40 degrees Celsius mark at least until June 5, aided by cloudy conditions and intermittent rain. Temperatures Stay Below Seasonal Average Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 37.7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was 2.3 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average. The relatively mild weather conditions experienced over the past several days have provided respite to residents from the prolonged summer heat. Data released by the IMD showed that temperatures remained below normal across most monitoring stations in the city. Ayanagar recorded a maximum temperature of 36.1 degrees Celsius, while Safdarjung, the city`s primary weather station, registered a high of 37.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26.8 degrees Celsius. After an extreme spell of heat wave around the capital, residents are expected to get continued respite from the intense summer heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the region over the next few days. As per the weather forecast agency IMD, these conditions are likely to persist until June 4, helping keep temperatures under control. IMD issues yellow alert across Delhi and NCR For Tuesday, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for the national capital, warning of possible thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light rainfall, and strong winds, particularly during the night. Wind speeds may reach 40-50 kmph in some areas. The department, however, has not issued any colour-coded warnings for Wednesday and Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated an early push of the southwest monsoon, with conditions turning favourable for its advance over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands during the next four to five days. The development comes amid widespread weather activity across the country, triggered by multiple cyclonic circulations, troughs and an approaching Western Disturbance, bringing a mix of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds and heatwave conditions. Heavy rainfall alert across southern states According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of South India, particularly Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe and south Interior Karnataka over the next few days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected across several regions, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and parts of peninsular India. Light rain and dust storms lashed parts of Delhi on Sunday evening. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), winds up to 50 kilometres per hour blew in the city early Sunday evening, as a dust storm hit most parts of the city. Parts of Dwarka, Vasant Kunj and Vasant Vihar also saw light rain. Later in the evening, winds measuring around 40 kilometres per hour were seen. The pre-monsoon rain was accompanied by strong winds, bringing down the temperature in Delhi.  The dust storm in the evening came after a scorching sunny afternoon when the temperature reached around 35 degrees Celsius.  Yesterday, the regional meteorological department said light to moderate intensity rain would likely occur in Delhi-NCR.
