China ‘evaluating’ US offer to negotiate tariffs; Beijing’s door is ‘open’ | World News

Beijing is “evaluating” an offer from Washington to hold talks over US President Donald Trump’s crippling tariffs, China’s Commerce Ministry said on Friday, signalling a potential de-escalation in the trade war that has roiled global markets. The United States has approached China to seek talks over Trump’s 145% tariffs and Beijing’s door was open for discussions, the commerce ministry said. The US should be prepared to take action in “correcting erroneous practices” and cancel unilateral tariffs, the commerce ministry said in a statement, adding that Washington needed to show “sincerity” in negotiations. “The US has recently taken the initiative on many occasions to convey information to China through relevant parties, saying it hopes to talk with China,” the statement said, adding that Beijing was “evaluating this”. Story continues below this ad “Attempting to use talks as a pretext to engage in coercion and extortion would not work,” it added. China has repeatedly denied it is seeking to negotiate a way out of the tariffs with the United States, appearing instead to be betting that Washington …

NHTSA staffers evaluating the risks of self-driving cars were reportedly fired by DOGE

NHTSA staffers evaluating the risks of self-driving cars were reportedly fired by DOGE

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) fired about 30 members of the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in February, and many of them were part of a department that assesses the risks of self-driving cars, according to the Financial Times. One worker laid off from the NHTSA’s so-called “office of vehicle automation safety” told the FT that DOGE’s actions could “weaken NHTSA’s ability to understand self-driving technologies.” Another worker said it’d be “ironic” if the firings would slow down Tesla’s plans for autonomous vehicles. The firings also came just months after the NHTSA released a new framework that could ease regulation on self-driving cars, but in exchange, companies would need to share more data with the regulator. Apple Evaluating Development of Its Own TV Set Alongside Upcoming Smart Home Devices: Mark Gurman

Apple is considering the development of its own TV set, according to details shared by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The possibility of an Apple-branded TV set was mentioned in his weekly Power On newsletter, where he discussed Apple’s purported smart home hub, which is said to arrive as a wall-mounted device. The Apple TV box (with tvOS) competes with similar devices that run on Android TV OS and Fire OS, but the company is yet to introduce its own TV set. Apple TV Set Could Compete With Offerings From Popular TV Manufacturers Gurman writes that Apple is “evaluating” the development of an “Apple-branded TV set” in his newsletter, which suggests that the company is at a very early stage. However, MacRumors points out that this is not the first time that word of Apple’s plans to make its own TV have surfaced online — the company was rumoured to be developing its own TV as early as 2009. Apple’s purported TV set would arrive as part of several smart devices being developed by the company, according …

Parineeti Chopra: ‘Evaluating a few interesting offers’

We would often hear that Parineeti Chopra can only do bubbly roles. But in the past few years, the actor proved her detractors wrong with intense parts, be it in Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021) or in the much-loved Amar Singh Chamkila. Having successfully widened her range as a performer, she now wants to widen her horizon. Chopra, who has been dividing her time between India and England since her 2023 wedding to Raghav Chadha, is now exploring acting opportunities in the British film industry. Unlike her cousin Priyanka Chopra Jonas or her peers who have been Hollywood-bound, she wants to take a stab at British cinema.   The UK has always had a special place in her heart as she studied at the Manchester Business School. During her time there, she developed a deep appreciation for the country’s cinematic culture. Now, as Chopra is taking baby steps in British movies, we hear she has hired an international agent. A source tells us, “Parineeti has roped in an international agent, who will pitch her for …

MG Motor Says EVs Will Make Up Quarter of Sales in 2023, Evaluating Launch of MG4 Hatchback eHS Hybrid SUV

MG Motor India, owned by China’s SAIC Motor, expects electric vehicles (EV) to account for at least a quarter of its sales in India in 2023, the automaker said during the country’s biennial auto show on Wednesday. “At the end of this year, 25 to 30 percent of our sales will be all-electric,” Managing Director Rajeev Chaba said, adding that it is evaluating the launch of the MG4 electric hatchback and eHS plug-in hybrid SUV in India, which were unveiled at the event. MG Motor has just over a 1 percent share of India’s passenger vehicles market, where it sells the ZS EV SUV. SAIC Motor has previously said that it has a wide portfolio of new energy vehicles (NEVs), which include electric, hybrid and fuel cell cars, which MG can choose from to sell in India. MG Motor plans to raise funds to develop its Indian electric mobility business, Reuters reported in March, amid increased scrutiny of Chinese investments by New Delhi. MG entered India in 2019 with plans to invest about $650 million …

US’ Kentucky Begins Evaluating Cost-Effective Electricity Operations for BTC Miners

The authorities of Kentucky state in the US are opening a probe to check if subsidising crypto mining operations would spike up the electricity costs for state dwellers. The development comes in the backdrop of the US, gradually emerging to become a hub for crypto miners, that are swarming to the country from several parts of the world. The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) is now examining two contracts, that propose to provide electricity to BTC miners at discounted rates. The contracts have been extended to the Kentucky authorities by Kentucky Power and Ebon International LLC. While the former is an established power supplier in the state, the latter already runs mining facilities in Louisa and Waverly. “Cryptocurrency mining is extremely and exponentially energy-intensive by design, and the discounted rates for these facilities could result in higher electric bills for everyday Kentuckians,” an official statement from the Kentucky authorities read. The investigations into these two contract proposals have been opened by advocates from the Kentucky Resources Council and the Kentucky Public Service Commission. The development …
