Arturia’s AstroLab 37 crams 44 synths into a tiny keyboard

Arturia’s AstroLab 37 crams 44 synths into a tiny keyboard

Last year, Arturia launched its first stage keyboard, AstroLab. Unlike a synthesizer, stage keyboards are more focused on delivering performance-ready presets than sound design. They’re geared towards touring and performing musicians who need access to a range of sounds with minimal fuss, rather than bedroom tinkerers. But, while the first entries in the series were sizable and pricey — $2,999 for the 88-key model, and $1,999 for the 61-key model — the AstroLab 37 delivers the same sonic repertoire in a smaller, much more affordable package. It’s a portable 37-slimkey instrument that costs only $699. What makes the AstroLab range stand out from much of its competition is that it’s essentially Arturia’s AnalogLab classic synth emulations in hardware form. Arturia’s synth plugins are incredibly popular, and with good reason — they’re excellent. But until last year, they were constrained to your computer. The AstroLab gives you access to most (though not all of them) in a standalone instrument, albeit in a stripped-down form. Arturia’s V Collection gives you deep editing tools and rich recreations of …

The keyboard of choice for modular synth nerds gets a proper sequel after 10 years

The keyboard of choice for modular synth nerds gets a proper sequel after 10 years

If you’ve ever watched a synth video on YouTube, there’s a decent chance you’ve seen the Arturia KeyStep at some point. The affordable keyboard and controller has been a steady presence since its release in January of 2016, especially in DAWless circles. Now Arturia is finally releasing a proper successor, the KeyStep mk2, and on paper, it seems like a big upgrade. The core of what makes the KeyStep beloved remains unchanged: 32 solid minikeys with aftertouch, a small footprint, decent connectivity options, and low price. The mk2 features USB-C for power and MIDI, five-pin MIDI in and out ports, analog sync in and out, a sustain / expression pedal input, plus CV and gate outputs for hooking up modular gear. The headlining updates here are the new generative capabilities, Mutate and Spice, borrowed from the company’s Freak line of synths. Mutate makes semi-random changes to an arpeggio or sequence, endlessly iterating on ideas. And if you find something you like, you can save it as a new sequence. With this ability to create happy …

Logitech’s latest keyboard dabbles in enthusiast features

Logitech’s latest keyboard dabbles in enthusiast features

Logitech’s Alto Keys K98M mechanical keyboard is now available in North America after its initial launch in China and other select markets. The $149.99 Alto Keys K98M is an almost full-size 1800-layout keyboard, offering a slightly compact design that maintains a number pad. But what makes the K98M special for a mass-market Logitech board is that it’s fully hot-swappable with standard Cherry MX-compatible key switches and uses an internal gasket mount for a semi-soft typing feel. Logitech is taking some belated cues from enthusiast keyboards. The Alto Keys has a two-piece plastic case with a translucent top portion and opaque bottom that’s color-matched to its included keycaps. It comes in white, graphite, and lavender color combos, with white backlighting and shine-through PBT keycaps. It’s a simple and clean aesthetic designed for mass appeal. As are its specs and features, like a claimed battery life of up to 12 months (with white backlighting turned off) and Bluetooth / Logi Bolt wireless connectivity — each usable on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS / iPadOS, and Android. I’ve …

There’s nothing wrong with a thong made out of a keyboard

There’s nothing wrong with a thong made out of a keyboard

In December 2024, actor and fashion icon Julia Fox stepped out on the street with a flip-phone buckle strapped across her chest, wires on her nails, and an old Discman-turned-compact mirror hanging from her wrist. Fox didn’t start the retro-tech fashion trend. Celebrities and internet fashionistas were already wearing iPod Shuffle Minis as hair clips and wired headphones as necklaces. But Fox did make waves online, showing off the Y2K-inspired collaboration from French Canadian artist Gab Bois and refurbished electronics marketplace Back Market — and plugging the Right to Repair movement — on her Instagram. Gab Bois x Back Market collaboration. Photo: Gab Bois Much of this fashion channels nostalgia over the nascent days of the digital age — both aesthetically and philosophically. Bois previously designed fine jewelry using sim cards, a camcorder clutch, and a Nintendo DS Lite makeup palette. “[Tech] was clunkier, slower, but also more tactile and charming,” Bois says. “There was this sense of optimism, too. Everything felt like a glimpse into the future.” Younger millennials and Gen Z latching on …

Qwertykeys halts keyboard shipments to US over tariff costs and confusion

Qwertykeys halts keyboard shipments to US over tariff costs and confusion

The keyboard company Qwertykeys has temporaily halted all shipments to the United States in response to President Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods going into effect. The company says it’s working on ways to mitigate shipping costs and that the tariffs have made it so that “all keyboards from China to the U.S. are now subject to 45% tariffs at full value.” “We are closely watching the progress of the situation and really hope that there is something else we can do other than bumping the price up,” the company wrote in a comment on Reddit. Qwertykeys says that its delivery partner, DHL, “now requires prepayment of 50% of the declared product value as a tariff deposit, plus a $21 processing fee per package.” That would drastically raise prices for customers in the US, something Qwertykeys says is “unsustainable for both our business and customers.” The company plans to pause shipping for 72 hours, during which it will negotiate with DHL and “alternative logistics providers” to obtain “fairer tariff-handling solutions.” Qwertykeys, which specializes in mechanical keyboards …
