Federation Cup finale disappoints as Indian javelin throwers miss CWG mark

2 min readRanchiMay 25, 2026 10:57 PM IST After three days of record-breaking action at the Federation Cup in Ranchi, the finale turned out to be a letdown, with the javelin throw event not living up to expectations. Despite six throwers with personal bests of over 80m and the presence of Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Kumar Jena, World Championships finalist Sachin Yadav, and Rohit Yadav, the event was subdued, with youngster Shivam Lohakare winning the competition with a new personal best of 81.71m. The major shock came when none of the throwers breached 82.61m, the Commonwealth Games benchmark. Shivam’s effort was the only positive in the competition as he threw four 80m+ throws while favourite Sachin (79.4m) failed to touch the 80m mark. While Sachin tried multiple things to counter the wind, like throwing a flat throw and giving a lot of flight to the javelin, but nothing worked for him on the night. “An athlete can have an off day. I don’t think it would derail him. We will do better at the …

After a surgery, Kishore Jena eyes comeback at Fed Cup Athletics

In early October last year, Kishore Jena felt he had erred by going under the knife. A painful bone growth at the left ankle required surgery, but post-operation, as expected, he found it extremely difficult to walk. A silver medallist at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, leading Neeraj Chopra at one point with an 87-plus metre throw, Jena’s mind was wracked with doubt. “The first few days after surgery (in Mumbai) I felt like I had made a mistake. I couldn’t walk properly, I had to just sit down. I thought, ‘how will I ever throw again?’ But the physio and coach supported me, and the recovery began. Now, I am feeling better,” Jena recalled. One comforting message was from Chopra. “When you are down, not many people stand by you,” Jena said when asked about those who kept in touch. “Neeraj bhai messaged saying ‘everything will be fine’ after I had posted about the surgery.” Story continues below this ad Six months after the ankle surgery, Jena made a return at the Indian Open …

Kishore Jena reflects on Diamond League debut

Bhubaneswar: Asian Games medalist Kishore Kumar Jena cited ‘overconfidence’ as the reason behind his subdued performance on the much-awaited Diamond League debut in Doha last week. The Javelin Thrower from Odisha is currently in Bhubaneswar to participate in the ongoing Federation Cup Athletics where he will be playing his final tomorrow. “As we know Javelin is a technical event, and there were some issues with my run-up. The warmup was good but I guess I was a little overconfident. I have to work it down now,” Kishore said in the pre-event press conference on Tuesday at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. Kishore made his Diamond League debut at the Doha meeting last week and finished ninth with the best throw of 76.31m. However, one of the coaches cited that his making debut at such a big event played some role in the performance. Neeraj Chopra, Kishore Jena To Compete Directly In Fed Cup Finals

Star Indian javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena have been given direct entry into the Federation Cup finals in Bhubaneswar on May 15, having already bettered the minimum qualification mark of 75m multiple times in their careers. Olympic and world champion Chopra is coming off a fairly good outing at the Doha Diamond League last week where he finished second with a throw of 88.38m. Asian Games silver-winner Jena’s Diamond League debut, however, ended in disappointment as he was eliminated after three rounds with 76.31m being his best. DP Manu, who finished sixth in the 2023 World Championships and who is looking to qualify for the upcoming Paris Olympics by breaching the 85.50m mark, will also compete directly in the finals. “All those who have crossed 75m will not compete in the qualifying round on Tuesday. There are nine of them from among those who had made entries, including Neeraj and Jena. They will directly compete in the final on Wednesday,” Indian athletics head coach Radhakrishnan Nair said, quoting the Athletics Federation of India’s …
