Mamata Banerjee calls for emergency KMC councillors` meeting

Trinamool Congress supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has convened an emergency meeting with all the party councillors in Kolkata Municipal Corporation, following successive notices from the KMC to her nephew Abhishek Banerjee’s multiple properties during the last seven days.  A party councillor, who did not wish to be named, said the main agenda is to discuss the evolving situation. The party feels that the KMC bureaucratic setup is functioning independently at the behest of the Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Department and is ignoring the elected councillors, mayor and members-mayor in council (MMIC). Srinath Four police personnel, who were on night duty at the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMC) police station, were placed under suspension for failing to perform their duties effectively inside the hospital on Sunday (January 11, 2026) night, which led to the murder of a history-sheeter on the premises early on Monday (January 12). Further, the Kilpauk Assistant Commissioner of Police and the Inspector of Police were issued memos seeking explanations for their negligence. The murder of a 23-year-old history sheeter on the hospital premises drew sharp criticism from the Opposition. The victim, Adhi of Kolathur, was brutally hacked to death in the early hours of Monday while sleeping in a drunken state at the waiting area outside the maternity ward of KMC. Adhi, who had multiple criminal cases pending against him, had come to the hospital to console his friend Suchitra after her newborn had died. The police said …

KMC achieves 75 per cent property tax collection

Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) realised a little over 75 per cent of the targeted property tax collections for the financial year 2024-25. The collection of property taxes and water charges ended on March 31. According to KMC officials, the total demand for property tax for the 2024-25 financial year was ₹94.73 crore from the 1,16,321 assessments. This included arrears of ₹28.32 crore. The officials realised an amount of ₹71.79 crore, which included ₹12.53 crore arrears and the 2024-25 financial year’s demand of ₹59.26 crore. It all added up to a total collection of 75.78 per cent of the targeted property tax demand, which is slightly better than the 2023-24 collections. In 2023-24 financial year, the demand was raised for collecting ₹76.09 crore and the collections stood at ₹57.34 crore, with a percentage of 75.37 collections. The KMC officials made a sustained campaign to collect arrears as well as the year’s property taxes, water charges and trade licence fees, since the beginning of the year. KMC showcauses officer for cancelling Biswakarma Puja holiday to extra day to Eid vacation at Hindi medium schools | Kolkata News

The Chief Manager (Education) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) was showcaused after the West Bengal BJP criticised the cancellation of school holiday for Biswakarma Puja on September 17 and allocating that holiday to Eid ul Fitr, from March 31 to April 1, for Hindi medium KMC primary (KMCP) schools. On Tuesday, a notice issued and signed by Chief Manager (Education) Siddhartha Sankar Dhara read, “There will be no holiday for Biswakarma Puja on September 17 2025 as one day from its allocated holiday has been adjusted to extend the Eid ul Fitr holiday.” A notice from the KMC later in the day withdrew Dhara’s notice. “(A) memorandum…regarding the holiday list for Hindi Medium KMCP Schools was issued without obtaining any concurrence from the competent authority of the KMC…The KMC clarifies that the original memorandum…stands cancelled as it was issued without the KMC authority’s permission. KMC bill exempting schools from property tax gets Governor’s nod | Kolkata News

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday gave his assent to ‘The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2023’, which exempts schools from paying property tax, a senior official said. “It is considered necessary and expedient to amend the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980 (West Ben. Act LIX of 1980), inter alia, for the purpose of making provision for exempting the lands or buildings comprising educational institutions, administered or aided, by the state government from payment of property tax,” the Bill, which was passed by the state assembly in September last year, states. “The Bill would bring clarity and transparency in the book of account of KMC as each year the government and government-aided schools generate more than Rs 10 crore unrealisable property tax bills,” Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim had said soon after the Bill was passed in the House. According to an official, there are currently 1,329 primary schools, 556 secondary schools, and 78 colleges in KMC jurisdiction, totaling around 1,963 premises.
