Bengal polls: SIR, infiltration, corruption to dominate campaign rhetoric

With the poll season in West Bengal now officially underway, several issues are expected to dominate the campaign rhetoric of political parties in the weeks ahead. SIR/Citizenship anxiety: The publication of post-SIR electoral rolls has triggered one of the most significant pre-election developments in the state in recent years, as the revision pruned nearly 63.66 lakh names from the voter list ahead of the assembly polls. With the electorate shrinking from 7.66 crore to just over 7.04 crore, the exercise has dramatically altered the state`s electoral landscape and introduced a new element of political uncertainty just as the campaign season begins. Apart from the deletions, around 60.06 lakh additional names are under adjudication, indicating that the voter list remains in flux even as political parties gear up for the polls. The churn has forced parties to reassess their booth-level arithmetic, particularly in districts where large numbers of deletions have been reported. The deletions are also concentrated in several border districts and urban belts â¿¿ areas that are electorally sensitive and politically contested. Infiltration: When PM …

The spreading of “misleading narratives” has the potential to undermine “good neighbourly relations and mutual trust”, it said. The statement came days after the ministry of external affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal flagged “unremitting hostility against minorities in Bangladesh” in the wake of the December 18 …

Party president Mallikarjun Kharge slammed the NDA government in Bihar over the security situation for women and asserted that the Mahagatbandhan (grand alliance)was fully committed to empowering and uplifting them.  Mr. Kharge said the Congress’ promises were not just to garner votes during elections or right before them, but rather, they were the same promises that the party would fulfil. “The BJP-JDU government in Bihar has been in power for 20 years. If even today, Modi ji has to say that in Bihar ‘daughters-in-law and daughters are not safe’, then this is his own self-admission that in 20 years, they have not made Bihar safe!” Mr. Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X. Divisive Rhetoric On Religion Harms Constitutional Unity: Supreme Court Judge

Divisive Rhetoric On Religion Harms Constitutional Unity: Supreme Court Judge

Ahmedabad: The increasing use of divisive rhetoric based on religion, caste and ethnicity poses a major challenge to the constitutional ideal of fraternity as well as the sense of unity in the country, Supreme Court judge Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra has said. He was speaking on the theme of ‘Fraternity: Spirit of the Constitution’ at a national council meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad, a lawyers’ organisation, at Vadtal in Gujarat’s Kheda district. The use of identity politics for votes by politicians can deepen social divisions, he warned. Divisive ideologies, growing economic inequality and social injustice are major threats to the spirit of brotherhood, and upholding fraternity is a “shared responsibility” of common citizens, institutions as well as leaders, Justice Mishra said. Among the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice, fraternity shines as the unifying thread that binds the fabric of our democratic society, and without fraternity, the other ideals remain fragile, “like a tripod missing a crucial leg,” he said. “A major challenge to fraternity is the increasing use of divisive rhetoric based …

Jharkhand Assrmbly election: Amid ‘infiltrator’ rhetoric, campaigns take different shapes in villages across Santhal Pargana

From doorstep delivery of construction materials for places of worship in Adivasi villages to pamphlets highlighting key promises such as cash for women, jobs for youth, and housing for all, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign in Santhal Pargana is playing out on the ground in different ways across the region’s northern-most constituencies, including Maheshpur, Rajmahal, Berhait, Pakur, and Borrio. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s (JMM) rhetoric of calling BJP’s star campaigners “outsiders”, in whose States tribal people are subjected to atrocities, too, is reaching several Adivasi-dominated villages through videos on social media. While several Adivasi communities spoke of infrastructure needs – for self and community — conversations in others featured concerns of Adivasi women marrying outside the community, consent, and changing demographics.  The Santhal Pargana division, which goes to polls on November 20, comprises six districts containing 18 Assembly constituencies. In the 2019 Assembly election, nine of these seats were won by the JMM, and four each by the BJP and Congress. In 2014, even when the BJP had formed the government, the JMM had won seven seats …

The priest of a Hindu temple in the Canadian city of Brampton has been suspended for spreading “violent rhetoric” during recent clashes between protesters carrying Khalistani flags and the people present there. On November 3, the protest occurred at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton and unverified videos circulating on social media appeared to show demonstrators holding banners in support of Khalistan. The videos showed fist fights and people striking each other with poles on what appears to be the grounds surrounding the temple. The protestors carrying Khalistani flags clashed with people and disrupted a consular event co-organised by the temple authorities and the Indian Consulate. On Wednesday, a statement from the Hindu Sabha Mandir said the suspension was due to the priest’s “controversial involvement” with protesters on Sunday, but did not elaborate, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported. Taking to X, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said the priest spread “violent rhetoric,” asking the community not to respond to violence and hate. “This is leadership that is helpful. The vast majority of Sikh Canadians and Hindu …

BJP national general secretary and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Saturday alleged that the vote on account budget for 2024-25 presented in the State Assembly reflected the Congress government’s “empty rhetoric” on its pre-poll promises and indifference towards farmers and agricultural workers. Addressing a public rally at Medipalli village in Vemulawada Assembly segment after launching his six-day ‘Prajahitha Padayatra’, Mr. Sanjay said, “It required over ₹5 lakh crore to implement all pre-poll promises of the Congress. Stating that the BJP government at the Centre conferred Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award, on former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao posthumously, he alleged that the Congress did not even allow the last rites of the great leader to be performed in New Delhi. Mr. Sanjay claimed …
