3 min readMumbaiMay 10, 2026 10:57 PM IST The 17.4 km long Dahisar river which has remained in a polluted state for several decades, is set to get a new lease of life with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiating an overall rejuvenation programme for the river. On Sunday (May 10) the civic body completed the first phase of this project, under which two Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) were inaugurated by Piyush Goyal — union minister and Mumbai North MP. According to the BMC data, these two STPs are set to improve the water quality by 40 times than what it was earlier. Speaking at the inauguration, Goyal said that the Dahisar river will be rejuvenated in lines of Ganga and Sabarmati rivers. “Just like Ganga, Dahisar river is also our mother. So it is our responsibility to rejuvenate it and protect it from degradation and give it a new life instead, since development is not about building and creating infrastructures only, but protecting environment is also a key part in it,” Goyal said in …

While playing, the boys slipped into the fast-flowing waters of the Shingo River. Akbar’s body was retrieved from the river in Hundurman a day later, but Zulqarnain couldn’t be traced. On Friday evening, a WhatsApp call from across the border informed the family that the body had been retrieved and buried in Gangani village of Baltistan, across the LoC. “He (Zulqarnain) would never go towards the river,” says his father Mohammad Hussain (38), a government school teacher. “They were three children, Zulqarnain, my sister’s son and another boy, relatively older. New Delhi, Observing that the right to pollution-free water is a fundamental right, the Supreme Court on Tuesday closed its 2021 suo motu proceedings on remediation of polluted rivers and directed the principal bench of the National Green Tribunal to reopen the matter and ensure continued monitoring. CHIEF MINISTER Yogi Adityanath said on Wednesday that efforts towards revival of endangered and polluted rivers in Uttar Pradesh should be transformed into a mass movement. “Whether it is the Gomti in Lucknow, Hindon in Ghaziabad, Varuna in Kashi, or any other river in the state, we must act in mission mode with collective resolve for their revival,” Adityanath said. He was speaking during a review meeting of the Namami Gange and Rural Water Supply Department. “It is unfortunate that the rivers that once sustained our culture have now been subjected to unplanned urbanisation and pollution,” he told officials. On December 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Madhya Pradesh’s Khajuraho to lay the foundation stone for various development projects. Among them was the ambitious Ken-Betwa river linking project that plans to transfer excess water from the Ken river basin to the Betwa river basin in the Bundelkhand region that covers parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Altogether 43 people, including 37 children, drowned and three others went missing while taking holy dips in rivers and ponds in separate incidents during the ‘Jivitputrika’ festival in Bihar, the state government said on Thursday. The incidents occurred in 15 districts of the state during the festival held on Wednesday. During the ‘Jivitputrika’ festival, women fast for the well-being of their children and both take holy dips. “A total of 43 bodies have been recovered so far. Further search operation is on,” a statement issued by the Disaster Management Department (DMD) said. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced an exgratia of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. The process of providing the exgratia has begun and family members of eight deceased have already received it, the statement said. “The incidents of drowning were reported from East and West Champaran, Nalanda, Aurangabad, Kaimur, Buxar, Siwan, Rohtas, Saran, Patna, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Gopalganj and Arwal districts.
