Todd Murphy is hopeful for spinners having a big role in Sydney Ashes Test

Todd Murphy is hopeful for spinners having a big role in Sydney Ashes Test

Australian off-spinner Todd Murphy is hopeful of spinners having a role in the fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2025-26 series at Sydney Cricket Ground. Spin hasn’t played much of a role in the ongoing series, with pacers dominating the proceedings right from the Perth Test. The SCG has historically favoured spinners. While England have sidelined their frontline spinner, Shoaib Bashir, in the four Tests so far, Nathan Lyon too has had only a limited role to play for Australia. However, with Lyon out due to injury and the Sydney Cricket Ground being a favoured venue for spinners, Murphy has reasons to believe that he might have a big role to play in his debut home Test. “I don’t think going into the series there was ever that planning or idea that spin wouldn’t play a role. I think it’s sort of just been how it’s eventuated. I think it’ll evolve from year to year. Next year it could be completely different,” said Murphy. Usman Khawaja calls Sydney wicket a ‘stinker’, Steve Smith says it ‘was toughest SCG pitch I’ve played on’

Usman Khawaja might have ended up on the right side of the result, and Pat Cummins declared the veteran opener would be persisted with later. But it didn’t stop the Aussie opener from speaking his mind about the surface and the tension it wrecked inside him. He called the wicket a ‘stinker’ that had kept him on knife’s edge. “I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t want to talk about it too much beforehand, but the wicket was a stinker,” Khawaja told ABC Grandstand post the BGT reclaiming after a 3-1 win. “It wasn’t like a traditional SCG wicket with the new grass on it, there’s cracks all over it, it’s been tough batting, the scoreboard will tell you that. Thankfully we were on the right side of the win but when it’s a wicket like that you’re always on a knife edge,” he added to ABC. Steve Smith went a step further to dissect the vile strands of the wicket, after chucklingly admitting he had been shredded – at 9999 career runs, at that. “I …

Sunil Gavaskar slams SCG pitch, calls it ‘not ideal’ for Test match | Cricket News

After 26 wickets fell in the first two days of the SCG Test, Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the pitch and said the pitch is “not ideal” for the Test match. “When I saw the pitch I did say the cows could have gone and grazed on it,” Sunil Gavaskar said on ABC Sport. “This is not the ideal Test match pitch that you want because you want it to go into a fourth or the fifth day. Unless there is rain I don’t see us being here on day four.” Gavaskar also said that “all hell would have broken loose” if the same thing happened on an Indian pitch. “All hell would have broken loose. There would have been all kinds of innuendos, all sorts of comments about ‘Is this a good pitch?’” he said. “Even former players who played on this pitch before were so surprised. We had Glenn McGrath saying he’d never seen that much grass on the pitch. “The point is, when you go overseas you have to be prepared to play …

IND vs AUS, Sydney Test: Australia Playing 11 sees big change as Mitchell Marsh misses out | Cricket News

IND vs AUS, Sydney Test: Australia Playing 11 sees big change as Mitchell Marsh misses out | Cricket News

IND vs AUS: Australia captain Pat Cummins has confirmed that Beau Webster will be replacing all-rounder Mitchell Marsh for the fifth and final Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney which is starting on Friday. This is the only change the team has seen after their commanding victory in Melbourne, as there were scares that Mitchell Starc could be nursing an injury. Pat Cummins mentioned that Mitchell Marsh clearly understood the change, since his performances were not up to the mark. “Mitch totally understands it… his words were I know runs haven’t come.. that makes (my) position vulnerable…” “Beau is really happy, he had been with this squad. Mitch (needs) time to freshen up and come back,” All-rounder Cameron Green underwent a surgery in his lower back ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which caused him to miss out on the series, keeping him away from the game for at least six to seven months. “Mitch was in the side this summer to be in the top six batters. When Cam (Cameron) Green comes back …

ICC Ratings: Bumrah sets new Test record, goes past Ashwin to become the highest ranked bowler for India | Cricket News

Jasprit Bumrah’s presented a performance for the ages in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as he has already secured 30 wickets in the series. His last outing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) saw him take nine wickets, and took his lead further up as the No. 1 ICC Men’s Test Bowler in the latest ICC Rankings. With a rating of 907, Bumrah has gone past Ravichandran Ashwin in rating points, making him the highest-ranked Indian bowler in Test cricket. Ashwin achieved his rating of 904 in 2016. This also puts Bumrah 17th on the all-time list, sharing the spot with Derek Underwood of England. The Indian spearhead also sees himself storming towards another record. Ahead of the fifth and final Test in Sydney, Bumrah is six wickets away from breaking the record for most wickets for an Indian bowler in a Test series. Bumrah, who has been shortlisted for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year award, ended 2024 with 71 Test wickets to his name, and has bowled at an average of 14.92. The …

Australia coach Andrew McDonald backs all-rounder Mitchell Marsh even after bad run in Border Gavaskar series | Cricket News

Australia coach Andrew McDonald backs all-rounder Mitchell Marsh even after bad run in Border Gavaskar series | Cricket News

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has had a tough summer so far, with his 47 in Perth being the only notable performance at the Border Gavaskar Trophy. While there have been talks and calls for the all-rounder to be dropped from the upcoming final Test of the series, Australian head coach Andrew McDonald backs Marsh to perform well. There have been speculations that Mitchell Marsh could potentially be nursing an injury, to which McDonald simply told Fox Cricket that the Allan Border Medalist is “in a good headspace” “There’s no concern. And I think people have probably been reading too much into that. We haven’t required him with the ball as often as what we would have thought,” he said. The injury speculations also rise from how much the all-rounder has been bowling this series. On the final day of the fourth Test in Melbourne, there were 76 overs bowled by the Australians, of which Marsh only bowled three. “His speeds are up in the high 120s, so there are no injury concerns there. I think …

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Awe-inspiring MCG – one of the many iconic stadiums in Australia | Cricket News

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Awe-inspiring MCG – one of the many iconic stadiums in Australia | Cricket News

The white picket fence and the silvery light towers, the history and halo, the Great Southern Stand sprawling like a curled whale and the vast, green outfield stolen from a Paul Gaugin canvas. The Melbourne Cricket Ground — the MCG, or simply the ‘G’— both daunts and marvels like few other cricketing arenas in the world. Even before one finishes uttering the abbreviation, the images gush, the mind composes a quick reel of iconic moments from memory. However, the same rings true for all stadiums in Australia. Every major cricketing venue in the country has a soul of its own, a distinguishable colour and character that captures the consciousness of the bleary-eyed television audience watching half a world away. Australia was once a collection of six states, all with their own virtues and flaws. The stadiums are an inevitable reflection of it, offering a window into a city’s sensibilities. It could be true for every stadium in the world, but those in Australia breathe a stronger identity and character, an essence that remains intact despite …

Border Gavaskar Trophy: India single-handedly kept in series by Jasprit Bumrah, says Ravi Shastri | Cricket News

Border Gavaskar Trophy: India single-handedly kept in series by Jasprit Bumrah, says Ravi Shastri | Cricket News

Ravi Shastri believes that Jasprit Bumrah has single-handedly managed to keep India alive in the Border Gavaskar Trophy and thinks that India’s big guns will finally start firing in Melbourne and Sydney and that Australia have a ‘problem on their hands’. Speaking to the ICC Review, Shastri said that the fight that India showed in Adelaide to avoid the follow on would be a big boost to the team as the series headed to Melbourne. Celebrations in the dressing room when Akash Deep cut the ball for four surprised many, but the psychological boost of avoiding a defeat at Adelaide would spur India, according to the former Indian head coach. “It’ll lift the Indian team. And for me, the series is on a level peg now and India might just be calling the shots. Massive. They would give anything for a 1-1 result. The first Test was in Perth, the second Test a day-nighter in Adelaide, and then the third Test was in Brisbane. Any overseas team will, you know, settle for a 1-1 score …
