‘Whatever may be my reputation, I have always been human’: Rahul Dravid on his century celebration in iconic 2001 Eden Gardens Test | Cricket News

3 min readMar 12, 2026 01:12 PM IST Rahul Dravid scored a memorable century 25 years ago during the iconic second Test at the Eden Gardens against Australia and followed it with an unusually animated celebration. Known for his calm and composed demeanor, Dravid’s celebrated by angrily pointing the bat at the press box at the Eden Gardens, a reaction that is uncharacertistic for a player who was known for his calm demeanor. The 53-year-old has now admitted that he may have allowed things to get to him, which he could’ve avoided. Speaking to TOI, he looked back at the moment and stated that he believes that the celebration itself may have got a little more attention than it deserved. “That’s been blown out of proportion a little bit. I think in some ways, there was a lot of pressure on me. You can’t really react to everything people say. I understand that better now because I’m a bit wiser, more mature and have seen a fair bit of life in 25 years. But I …

ICC T20 World Cup: Courage, team spirit, fearlessness, trust and faith – how Gautam Gambhir & Suryakumar Yadav explained latest addition to India’s trophy cabinet | Cricket News

The trophy gleamed beside Suryakumar Yadav on the table. The gaze of coach Gautam Gambhir, seated to his right, often veered towards the trophy. He shed his usual stiff demeanour, smiled and laughed and only put on a stern face when it was mentioned that Surya is the more natural smiler. “Yes, yes, he is the smiler,” Gambhir said, before putting on a stern face. It was a night the masks fell off the captain and coach, when their emotions were pure, when they were unstained by the need to put on a different face in front of the media. Surya, repeatedly filing disclaimers that the moment is sinking in, did not try many wisecracks but spoke as he naturally would, at times with a sense of informality. “When we wake up tomorrow and go back home, I don’t know where we are going, but it will be a special feeling,” he said, still in dazed wakefulness. Gambhir was more switched on and articulate. His pet word was courage. He sprayed it five times and …

Jason Gillespie flaps his arms to disturb VVS Laxman’s concentration during 2000/01 Kolkata Test and what happened next? ‘…He had this stupid grin on his face’

2 min readUpdated: Jan 30, 2026 06:35 PM IST Former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie is well known for his fast bowling and his impeccable ability to deliver in-swingers, out-swingers and his ability to reverse the older ball. However, despite all the abilities he possessed in his arsenal, he tried a different method to pick the wicket of VVS Laxman during the famous Kolkata Eden Gardens Test in the 2000/01 series, when the right-hander played a marathon 284-run knock. But what did he do? Gillespie tried to flap his arms before delivering the ball to disturb the concentration of Laxman. “Running into bowl in 2000/01 in Kolkata when Dravid and Laxman were scoring a stupid amount of runs against us, so I thought I would run in and flap my arms like a condor running into a ball to put VVS Laxman off,” Gillespie recalled in the Fast Bowling Cartel podcast. “I have done it, and then he (Laxman) puntbunted (played) it to the offside and ran through. He had this stupid grin on his face, …

‘No need for now but nothing wrong with it’: Harbhajan Singh on split coaching for India | Cricket News

‘No need for now but nothing wrong with it’: Harbhajan Singh on split coaching for India | Cricket News

India’s rather contrasting results in white-ball and red-ball cricket since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach has led to some suggesting that it might be time for the team to consider having different coaches for the formats. Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh, who was also a long time teammate of Gambhir with the national team, feels that there doesn’t seem to be a need for India to switch to the model for now but they should consider it if the need arises later. “It is not that easy to become a coach of India. To be a coach, you have to travel with the team for a whole year and keep yourself involved in the game. You have to be more engaged because there are multiple team selections, and you also need to focus on match results,” said Harbhajan on ANI. Harbhajan said that whether the coaching responsibilities need to be split or not might be dictated by future results. “In India, it is our tradition that if the team plays well, everyone is …

‘Laxman’s name will come forward’: Pressure increasing on head coach Gautam Gambhir, says former India batter | Cricket News

With India suffering their fourth defeat at home under Gautam Gambhir’s tenure in an embarrassing 30-run loss to South Africa at the Eden Gardens last week, the head coach’s position under is serious threat, reckoned former India batter Mohammed Kaif. India’s home Test record held strong like a fortress for well over a decade until New Zealand breached the bastion last year and white-washed the hosts 3-0. South Africa’s stunning heist at the Eden Gardens, marking their first win in India in 15 years, made matters worse for a transitioning Indian side that is struggling to form an identity at home. Gambhir’s defence of the turning wicket prepared at Kolkata raised further questions, with several former Indian and international cricketers disagreeing with the move. With mounting defeats at home leaving a bad impression, Kaif said Gambhir’s exit could be inevitable if the trend continues against top-ranked side. Kaif, who played 13 Tests, said that India batting legend VVS Laxman could be among the front-runners to replace Gambhir in such a scenario. Laxman, the current head …

“It Was A Mental…”: Ex-India Star Gives Shocking Reason Of Virat Kohli’s Sudden Retirement

All the cricket fans around the world were left heartbroken after star India batter Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 36-year-old batter, who made his Test debut in 2011, called time on his career after playing 123 matches and scoring 9,230 runs. Throughout his career in whites, Kohli made runs everywhere and dominated a variety of conditions, regions, and bowlers. He plundered runs everywhere, and for the players overseas, he emerged as a bullish, relentless, and dominant force unprecedented in world cricket. As the entire nation is currently dealing with the news of Kohli’s departure, former India opener Aakash Chopra gave an interesting insight on what would have led him to take such a decision. “He played Test cricket with the intensity of T20s. He ran a marathon at the speed of a sprint and kept running, and that is absolutely insane. As a batter, you can put all your effort into fielding, but he used to run all over the ground, celebrate every wicket, lift someone, or make someone …

When floodlight failure hit first-ever IPL match in Kolkata and VVS Laxman, Ricky Ponting slammed ‘shocking’ Eden Gardens pitch | Ipl News

The Indian Premier League carnival is set to enter its 18th season with the first match of IPL 2025 set to be played between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the iconic Eden Gardens. For the first time in 17 years since the inaugural IPL match between KKR and RCB at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on April 18, 2008, the two teams will lock horns in an IPL season opener on Saturday. While the opening match of the T20 tournament itself was a spectacle worth remembering where KKR’s Brendon McCullum slammed a spellbinding 158 not out against RCB, the first-ever IPL match in Kolkata a few days later wasn’t short on the drama quotient either. April 20, 2008: When lights went down at Eden on IPL debut Only the third night into the tournament, KKR were at the Eden Gardens to host the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in their first IPL match at the venue. On a spicy pitch that wasn’t conducive to the batters, VVS Laxman’s Deccan unit tottered …
