Southwest monsoon reaches Kerala, marks official beginning of rainy season

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, marking the official beginning of India`s four-month rainy season, reported the PTI. The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, a few days later than its usual onset date of 1 June. Earlier forecasts had suggested the monsoon would arrive as early as May 26, but its progress was delayed. According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has now advanced across the entire Lakshadweep region, Kerala and Mahe, as well as parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The weather system has also expanded over large sections of the Arabian Sea, the Comorin area and several parts of the Bay of Bengal, indicating a steady progression across the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala within the next two to three days. The weather system is also expected to advance into parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and several areas of the Bay of Bengal during the same period. Meteorologists have attributed the expected monsoon advance to multiple weather systems, including upper-air cyclonic circulations over the Arabian Sea, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Bay of Bengal. The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall activity across Kerala and Lakshadweep over the coming week. Heavy rainfall of 7 cm to 11 cm in 24 hours is likely at isolated places in Kerala on June 1 and June 2. Rainfall intensity is expected to increase significantly from June 3 onwards. Jaisalmer in Rajasthan has recorded an unprecedented spike in temperatures, setting a new April record at 46.4 degrees Celsius. This surpasses the previous high of 46.3 degrees registered on April 18, 2025, marking one of the most intense heat episodes in recent years.  Over the past 24 hours, maximum temperatures across all major cities in the state exceeded 40 degrees. After sudden gusty winds and an overnight dust surge Wednesday, much of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to a thick haze, with visibility plunging at many locations in the Capital, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Thursday. Due to an incoming cloud mass reported Wednesday night, sudden gusty winds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour over the Palam area swept fine dust particles into the lower atmosphere. A senior IMD official said that visibility fell from 4,500 m to 1,200 metre in under two hours from 10 pm to 11.30 pm. Although winds later calmed to 3 to 7 kmph, the suspended haze lingered through the night, affecting the air quality.
