The Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has explained the strategy behind retiring out opener Devon Conway in the IPL 2025 game against Punjab Kings.
Punjab Kings secured an 18-run victory after Chennai failed to chase the target of 220 runs on the board.
During the chase, Devon Conway retired out and Ruturaj Gaikwad clarified the reason for the decision. Devon Conway who smashed six boundaries and two sixes in the match, was asked to retire out in the 18th over.
He scored 69 runs off 49 balls in the match. Meanwhile Jadeja took the charge after Conway went back to the hut. However, the tactical decision didn’t work for CSK as they managed to score 201/5 at the end of their innings.
In the final over, CSK needed 28 runs with MS Dhoni was on strike who was sent out on Yash Thakur’s delivery giving a simple catch to Yuzvendra Chahal. Meanwhile Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten 9 runs off five balls.
Speaking on the Conway’s reitre out, the decision was taken after seeing that Conway was struggling to score runs.
“Lot of positives in the batting department. We were two or three hits away today, Devon is more of a timer of a ball. Very useful at the top of the order,” he explained.
“You know the batsman is struggling. We waited for him to time it and then changed when we thought it was necessary,” Ruturaj added.
To the question about Jadeja could have finished better, Ruturaj Gaikwad said, “Well, you know, he’s more of a timer of the ball, very useful up the order, but definitely, when you have Jaddu (Jadeja), his role is completely different, and he’s known for that role particularly.”
“So you expect that change to happen at some point when you know the batsman is struggling,” Gaikwad said after the match.
Chennai Super Kings are struggling this season as they have lost four matches so far. They secured ninth position of the IPL 2025 points table with just 2 points On the other hand, Punjab Kings are among the top four teams in the points table after winning three out of four matches they played.
Chennai will play their next match against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 11 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
