Brazilians struggle to navigate social media without X | World News

The recent blocking of social media platform X in Brazil has ignited a heated debate among citizens and politicians about the justification of the ban. Brazilians faced difficulties adapting to alternative platforms on Sunday after X became largely inaccessible on both web and mobile apps since Saturday. The shutdown was prompted by Elon Musk’s failure to meet a deadline set by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes to appoint a legal representative in Brazil. This move marks a significant intensification of the ongoing feud between Musk and de Moraes over issues of free speech, far-right accounts, and misinformation, as reported by the Associated Press. Brazil, a significant market for X with millions of users, has been impacted by the platform’s ban. Entertainment writer Chico Barney, a regular X user, expressed his discontent on Threads, an alternative app from Instagram, stating, “I feel disconnected from current events, it’s surreal.” Barney also criticized Threads’ algorithm, comparing it to a restaurant where the waiter persistently serves unwanted dishes, highlighting his dissatisfaction with the alternative platform, as reported by …

New Delhi [India], : Purani Dilli 6 secured a thrilling 6-wicket victory over West Delhi Lions in a low-scoring encounter at the Delhi Premier League T20, held at Arun Jaitley Stadium here. Delhi Premier League T20: Keshav Dalal and Ayush Singh shine as Purani Dilli-6 beat West Delhi Lions in low-scoring thriller This win keeps Purani Dilli 6 in contention for a semi-final spot, as they currently sit third on the points table. Chasing a target of 140 on Saturday, Purani Dilli 6 began positively, with captain Arpit Rana scoring 20 off 13 balls and his opening partner, Manjeet, contributing 32 off 26 deliveries. However, their momentum was briefly halted after the quick dismissals of Rana and Yug Gupta , prompting a more cautious approach. This strategy backfired as they lost two more wickets in quick succession of Manjeet, the set batter, and Arnav Bagga, who managed only 6 runs off 14 balls, thus leaving the team struggling at 82/4 after 12 overs. Sensing the need to stabilize the innings, wicketkeeper-batter Keshav Dalal and Lalit …

Representational image of aluminium foil rolls at a factory in Binzhou, Shandong province, China | Photo Credit: Reuters The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has recommended imposing an anti-dumping duty on aluminium foil imported from China after surging shipments from the neighbouring country captured nearly a third of India’s market share despite ample local production capacity. The recommendation, contained in a report published by the ministry late on Friday (August 30, 2024) and submitted to the government for approval, seeks to address a threat to the domestic manufacturing industry, the directorate general of trade remedies said in the report. It recommended a duty between $619 and $873 per metric ton on foil up to 80 microns thick, excluding aluminium foil below 5.5 microns for non-capacitor application. Aluminium foil is used extensively as a packaging material for the conservation and preservation of edible products. Source link

Gujarat High Court rejects Asaram`s plea for suspension of life sentence

The Gujarat High Court has rejected a plea by jailed self-styled godman Asaram, seeking the suspension of his sentence in a 2013 rape case, news agency PTI reported. The court cited a lack of “exceptional grounds” to warrant such a relief to Asaram, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Gandhinagar court last year. A division bench of Justices Ilesh Vora and Vimal Vyas, in their order passed on Thursday, denied the suspension of Asaram`s sentence and refused to grant him bail, stating that no compelling case for relief had been presented. The sessions court had convicted Asaram in January 2023 in a rape case filed by a woman who was living in his ashram near Gandhinagar. Asaram is currently incarcerated in Rajasthan`s Jodhpur jail in connection with another rape case. The court also took into account Asaram`s past conduct, including allegations of the …
