What Hegseth’s $37.5 billion estimate reveals about the cost of the Iran war | World News

United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has put the latest official price tag on the US-Israel war on Iran at $37.5bn.

Hegseth confirmed the figure during a hearing before the Senate appropriations committee on Tuesday, in which he and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine were questioned about their request for a $1.5 trillion US defence budget, including nearly $70bn for the war with Iran.

What did Hegseth tell the Senate

Hegseth said the extra war money is needed right away and called it a key part of President Donald Trump’s $1.5 trillion defence budget plan. He said the department will run into money problems without it. Protesters interrupted his opening remarks several times.

The hearing came just days after the Pentagon said three more American service members had died in the conflict, taking total deaths to 17, with more than 100 people hurt since early July.

Why are Democrats worried

Sen. Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the panel, said, “This war is now spiralling out of control again,” AP reported. She noted that Trump has repeatedly said a deal was close and the war would end soon, yet the administration is now asking for $70 billion more.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen questioned why more money was needed when the Pentagon has not yet spent about half of the $150 billion Congress gave it last year. Hegseth replied that the rest of that money would be used by September.

What happened during the hearing

The session turned heated at several points. Gen. Dan Caine, the top US military officer, said he could not say what the war would ultimately cost, since the enemy also has a say in how things unfold. Senators also pressed officials on whether Iran might start charging fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a route long used freely for oil shipments, but did not get a clear answer.

Later in the hearing, Sen. Gary Peters said the government’s war plan had failed, and Hegseth pushed back sharply, telling Peters he was making “campaign commercials,” according to AP. Peters replied that Hegseth himself was the failure, not US troops, and said the government has no long-term plan to win the war.

The Senate is due to vote this week on another resolution aimed at limiting the president’s war powers, after nearly a dozen earlier attempts. Republicans are pushing a $95 billion budget package through Congress using a process that lets the majority pass it without Democratic votes, the same method used for other recent bills. The plan also includes money for farmers hit by tariffs and for changes to voting laws.

AP reported that most Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling the Iran war, citing an AP-NORC poll, while petrol prices have risen as Iran seeks to control oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Outbound portability of medical scheme benefits Rajasthan’s patients

Outbound portability of medical scheme benefits Rajasthan’s patients

The outbound portability of the Mukhyamantri Ayushman Aroygya (MAA) Yojana for medical treatment has benefited about 30,000 patients from Rajasthan, who have received free treatment in other States during the last six months.

Over 5,900 claims amounting to ₹17 crore have been submitted by the patients for speciality treatment in States such as Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi. These treatments included heart stent procedures, heart bypass surgery, cancer surgery, chemotherapy, dialysis and Caesarean deliveries.

The inter-State portability was activated earlier this year to give beneficiaries under the MAA Yojana access to 16,000 government and 14,000 private hospitals across the country. Premier institutions such as AIIMS Delhi and Bhopal, PGI Chandigarh, Medanta, KGMU Lucknow and U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology, Ahmedabad, were included in the scheme.

Principal Medical and Health Secretary Gayatri Rathore said here on Tuesday (July 21, 2026) that the eligible beneficiaries were availing of cashless treatment worth up to ₹25 lakh at the hospitals empanelled under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) in various States.

The integration of MAA Yojana with PMJAY has ensured free and cashless treatment for patients beyond the State’s borders. “Every eligible person from Rajasthan can access quality medical treatment even outside the State’s boundaries without any financial burden when the need arises,” Ms. Rathore said.

There are 1.36 crore eligible families under the MAA Yojana in the State. The scheme includes 2,179 treatment packages, covering common ailments as well as serious conditions such as cancer, heart disease, kidney disease and organ transplants.

Pisces Horoscope Today, July 22, 2026: You may feel like needing more personal space

Pisces Horoscope Today, July 22, 2026: You may feel like needing more personal space

Pisces (Feb 20-Mar 20)

Daily prediction says,

The day may feel a little heavy at times, not because everything is going wrong, but because you’re more sensitive to tension and small disruptions. You may overthink messages, delays or other people’s moods, so avoid taking everything personally. A practical approach will serve you far better than reacting emotionally.

Pisces Horoscope (Canva)

If you’re travelling, driving or handling physical tasks, slow down and stay alert. You may also feel like needing more personal space, and that’s okay- just don’t shut people out completely. Family discussions about schedules, repairs or household matters may need extra patience. If something disappointing happens, treat it as a temporary setback rather than a major problem. A steady routine and calm responses will protect your peace.

Pisces Love Horoscope Today

Relationships remain steady rather than dramatic today. If you’re in a committed relationship, maintaining harmony is more important than proving a point. Stress or tiredness could lead to unnecessary arguments, especially over responsibilities or family matters.

Avoid bringing old issues into new conversations. If you’re single, attraction is possible, but this isn’t the right day for emotional risks or big declarations. Let trust develop naturally. A delayed reply or change of plans doesn’t necessarily mean rejection. If you’re already feeling uncertain about someone, patience will help more than repeated questioning. Quiet understanding will strengthen your bond.

Pisces Career Horoscope Today

Your creativity is strong, but concentration may depend on your emotional state. Students will benefit from revision, note-making and focused reading instead of trying to multitask. At work, communication around records, office arrangements, property matters or internal coordination needs extra attention. An email, document or instruction may require correction, so stay organised.

If your role involves clients or daily operations, remain professional and don’t react to small irritations. Creative ideas have potential today, but they’ll need careful planning. Constructive feedback will be valuable if you don’t take it personally.

Pisces Money Horoscope Today

This isn’t the best day for risky investments or impulsive spending. Household expenses, subscriptions, service payments or routine bills may need attention, making organisation especially important.

Check due dates, verify payments and avoid making financial decisions while feeling stressed. If someone pressures you to make a quick money decision, take your time and review the details first. Emotional spending may be tempting, but small unnecessary expenses can add up faster than you realise. Careful budgeting will keep you on track.

Pisces Health Horoscope Today

Your energy may fluctuate, so pay attention to fatigue, posture and emotional stress. Drive carefully, avoid rushing and don’t push yourself unnecessarily. Stress could show up as body stiffness, poor sleep or irritability.

Eat regular meals, stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary conflicts, as they may drain you more than usual. Gentle exercise, quiet music, prayer or a few peaceful moments will help you feel more balanced. Your body responds best to a simple, steady routine today.

Tip for the Day

Go slowly, avoid arguments, and let calm choices protect your energy.

Actor and BJP MP Ravi Kishan spoke about the ongoing controversy around the NEET paper leak on Tuesday, saying those involved should be given the “harshest punishment”. Prosecutors begin gruesome arguments against pop singer D4vd in murder case

Prosecutors begin gruesome arguments against pop singer D4vd in murder case

Prosecutors begin gruesome arguments against pop singer D4vd in murder case

LOS ANGELES, – Prosecutors on Tuesday began outlining in graphic detail their murder case against the indie pop vocalist known as D4vd, accused of fatally stabbing and dismembering his 14-year-old girlfriend after she threatened to make their relationship public.

Burke became a music sensation on TikTok in 2022, which landed him a recording deal. His first studio album was released in April 2025, in the week his girlfriend Celeste Rivas Hernandez went missing.

He was arrested in April 2026 and charged with first-degree murder, mutilation of human remains and child sexual abuse. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

A police detective described the discovery of a body, later identified through dental records as Celeste, in a car at an impound lot in Hollywood in September 2025.

Police were called to the facility when workers noticed a strong odor emanating from the vehicle, according to testimony from Los Angeles Police Department Detective Joshua Byers. The victim’s parents were seated in the courtroom as Byers described a gruesome scene, recounting a “very distinctive smell” of decay familiar to homicide detectives.

Investigators discovered Celeste’s torso and head inside a black vinyl cadaver bag stuffed in the front trunk of the Tesla registered to David Burke, the musician’s legal name. Underneath the body bag was a plastic garbage bag containing the victim’s severed limbs, Byers said.

The girl’s right index finger bore a cryptic tattoo that said “SHH,” Byers said.

Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman walked Byers through his testimony as she displayed macabre photos from the scene in the hushed courtroom.

The 21-year-old Burke, seated at the defense table in orange jail garb for the preliminary hearing, watched the screen, appearing to follow along attentively.

MORE WITNESSES TO BE CALLED

The preliminary hearing requires the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to demonstrate to a judge that sufficient evidence exists to proceed to trial with the case.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman, speaking to reporters outside the courthouse, said prosecutors would call more than 10 witnesses over three to five days and decide later whether to seek the death penalty.

Burke went viral for songs recorded on his phone for Fortnite gaming videos in 2022. The hit single “Romantic Homicide” helped him sign a deal with Interscope Records.

He performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California last year, less than two weeks before prosecutors say he committed murder out of fear that his underage girlfriend would upend his budding career.

“We believe the actual evidence will show David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez, nor was he the cause of her death,” defense attorney Blair Berk said during her client’s April 20 arraignment.

Prosecutors filed a court brief the following week outlining their evidence and the alleged motive for the girl’s slaying, which the DA’s office said was likely April 23, 2025, when her cellular activity ceased.

Prosecutors said Burke was out to silence the girl because she had grown jealous of him and threatened to ruin his burgeoning music career by going public with damaging information about their relationship.

Burke had secured highly profitable product endorsements at the time, the district attorney’s office said.

In one of the special allegations included in the charges, Burke is accused of committing murder for financial gain. Another alleges he did so because the victim was a witness to a crime.

‘HORRIFYING MEASURES’

Investigators recovered text message references to sex, pregnancy, abortion and Plan B emergency contraception, as well as sexually explicit photos.

One day after they had quarreled over her threats to expose him, according to the court brief, Burke hailed her an Uber ride to his home in the Hollywood Hills, then stabbed her to death after she arrived. An autopsy found she died of “multiple penetrating injuries.”

In their brief, prosecutors also alleged in graphic detail the “horrifying measures” they said Burke took to dismember and dispose of the girl’s body.

According to the document, the performer placed the victim’s body in a blue inflatable pool “to prevent blood from spilling onto his garage floor,” then removed her limbs with a chainsaw “and perhaps other tools.”

The brief said that Burke had purchased the pool, two chainsaws, a shovel, a cadaver bag and other materials online under a fictitious name and had them delivered to his home after the killing.

According to their court brief, Burke was the last person to drive the vehicle on July 29, 2025, before he left it abandoned near his home and departed on a concert tour. Weeks later, the car was towed to an impoundment lot where workers reported the odor of decay and alerted authorities on September 8.

A search of Burke’s garage that month found evidence of dismemberment, including blood samples and remnants of an inflatable pool with “multiple linear cuts,” according to prosecutors.

What is Bhakti in spirituality? A spiritual master shares 7 ways to practice it

What is Bhakti in spirituality? A spiritual master shares 7 ways to practice it

Bhakti is one of the oldest spiritual paths in Hindu philosophy, yet it is often misunderstood. Many people associate it with rituals like lighting a lamp, singing devotional songs, offering flowers, or visiting a temple. While these practices are part of Bhakti for many devotees, they are not the whole picture.

According to the Bhakti Sutras shared by the Aatman Awareness Centre, spiritual master HH Guruji Sundar teaches that Bhakti is not simply about worship. He describes it as a path of complete surrender, unconditional love, and inner transformation. In his teachings, true devotion begins in the heart and naturally shapes the way a person lives, serves, and relates to the Divine.

If you are new to spirituality, these seven teachings offer a simple introduction to what Bhakti means beyond rituals.

Also Read Most people misunderstand Bhakti. Here’s what a spiritual expert says it really means

1. See Bhakti as surrender, not just worship

HH Guruji Sundar says that real Bhakti is “total surrender to God or Guru.” He explains that surrender is much more than bowing before a teacher or performing religious ceremonies. It is the willingness to offer your body, mind, and soul to the Divine with complete trust.

According to these teachings, surrender means allowing your spiritual life to be guided by something greater than your personal desires or fears.

2. Let love become the foundation of your practice

One of the strongest messages in the Bhakti Sutras is that love is at the heart of devotion.

HH Guruji Sundar teaches that practicing Bhakti without love becomes an empty exercise. He says that love should arise naturally from the heart. When it does, surrender follows without force.

He also describes pure love as compassion. Instead of expecting something in return, this kind of love simply gives and accepts.

3. Keep doing your daily responsibilities

Many beginners believe that spiritual practice requires spending long hours in prayer or meditation. HH Guruji Sundar offers a different perspective.

He says there is no need to sit for long hours to practice Bhakti. Instead, surrender everything to God while continuing to perform your daily duties. In this view, work, family life, and everyday responsibilities can all become part of spiritual practice when they are approached with devotion.

4. Understand that everyone’s path is different

The teachings emphasize that Bhakti cannot be copied from someone else.

“No one can teach us Bhakti,” HH Guruji Sundar says, adding that the form of devotion varies from person to person.

Some people express devotion through prayer, others through service, music, meditation, or silent remembrance of God. Rather than comparing yourself with others, the focus is on developing a sincere relationship with the Divine in your own way.

5. Practice humility instead of seeking attention

According to the Bhakti Sutras, a true devotee does not try to stand out.

HH Guruji Sundar describes the real Bhakta as someone who quietly waits outside the crowd instead of seeking recognition. He teaches that genuine devotion is an inner connection with God rather than a public display of faith.

This reminder encourages spiritual seekers to value sincerity over appearances.

6. Focus on the quality of your devotion

The teachings suggest that God does not measure devotion by the size of an offering.

Instead, HH Guruji Sundar says that what matters is the quality and sincerity behind every act. Whether someone offers a simple prayer, a flower, or an act of service, the intention behind it carries greater importance than the gift itself.

This idea makes Bhakti accessible to anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.

7. Allow yourself to grow through love and compassion

Throughout the Bhakti Sutras, HH Guruji Sundar returns to one central theme. Spiritual growth begins with the heart.

He teaches that when love becomes genuine, compassion naturally follows. As devotion deepens, the devotee gradually becomes less focused on the self and more connected to the presence of God.

According to these teachings, Bhakti is not about escaping everyday life. It is about allowing love, surrender, and compassion to shape every part of it.

The Kannur district committee of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) staged a rail blockade at the Kannur railway station on Tuesday, protesting against the Delhi Police’s action against senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, and the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.

KSU activists blocked a train, raising slogans against the Union government. The police later arrested and removed the protesters.

Inaugurating the protest, KSU district president M.C. Athul alleged that the Centre was attempting to suppress even democratic protests by using the police. He claimed that the Centre had betrayed students by allowing the NEET examination to be compromised through question paper leaks.

Mr. Athul warned that the KSU would intensify its agitation in the coming days against what he described as the Centre’s anti-people policies, alleged NEET examination scam, and police action against Opposition members.

The protest was led by KSU district vice-president Ashith Ashokan and district secretary Suraj Pariyaram.

Mackenzie Shirilla update: Why prosecutors say her latest appeal deserves another ‘no’ at Ohio Supreme Court

Mackenzie Shirilla update: Why prosecutors say her latest appeal deserves another ‘no’ at Ohio Supreme Court

Mackenzie Shirilla’s fight to overturn her conviction has hit another hurdle, with Ohio prosecutors asking the state’s highest court to reject her latest appeal request

What did prosecutors say?

According to TMZ, in new legal documents, the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office has asked the Supreme Court of Ohio to reject Shirilla’s motion for reconsideration. The prosecutors argue that she has not brought up even one new issue that would need another look at her case.

Prosecutors accept that reconsideration can be used to fix a decision that is later found to be wrong, but they say it cannot be used just because someone wants to reargue their case. “What new material issue does Mackenzie Shirilla bring to this Court’s attention? None. In fact, Shirilla more than once directs the Court to arguments already briefed in her ‘previously filed memorandum in support of jurisdiction,’” prosecutors said in the documents, according to TMZ.

As per TMZ, prosecutors kept pointing the judges back to arguments that were already made before the court refused to hear her appeal last month. Shirilla has also asked the court to at least consider one of her four arguments if it won’t hear all of them but prosecutors said the judges already had that choice when they rejected her case earlier.

The state finished its response with a sharp comment about geography, writing, “Creating a new, Shirilla-specific exception is a matter for Broad Street, not Front Street.”

Why is Mackenzie Shirilla appealing again?

According to People, the Ohio Supreme Court rejected Shirilla’s latest appeal on June 23 after ruling that her legal team filed the petition one day after the legal deadline.

On July 7, her lawyers filed a motion asking the court to reconsider that decision, arguing that the filing deadlines were confusing, according to court documents cited by WOIO, WKYC and WJW.

The same day, Shirilla’s support team shared a new photo of her on Instagram from the Ohio Reformatory for Women, where she is serving her sentence.

The post said, “Mackenzie and her family (along with everyone’s help) will respectfully continue to do everything they can so that the merits of the brief can be heard, just as anyone else would do in their position.”

“Keep sharing everything you can and Please sign and share this petition for a fair re-trial. We ALL deserve fair representation and once you review her case you’ll agree she did not get that. Please click, sign, and share the petition in her bio. – Mackenzie Shirilla’s Support Team #freemackenzie #mackenzieshirilla #wrongfullyconvicted #thecrash,” it added.

What happened on the night of the crash

In the early hours of July 31, 2022, 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla was driving a 2018 Toyota Camry in Strongsville, Ohio, with her boyfriend Dominic Russo, 20, and his friend Davion Flanagan, 19. The three had spent the night at a friend’s house and left around 5:30am, according to People. Minutes later, Shirilla’s car hit a brick wall at nearly 100 mph on a road with a 35 mph limit, the report said. Russo and Flanagan died at the scene, while Shirilla was found unconscious and taken to the hospital with serious injuries, per People.

Investigators later found the car’s accelerator was fully pressed with no brake used in the 4.6 seconds before the crash. A forensic expert also found no mechanical or electrical failure that could have caused the car to lose control and Shirilla was found to be under the influence of marijuana and carrying psychedelic mushrooms at the time, according to court documents cited by People.
