Shriver filed for divorce in July 2011 after Schwarzenegger confessed during a marriage counselling session that he had fathered a secret child with their housekeeper.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was married to Maria Shriver for 25 years before she learned of his infidelity.

Maria Shriver has opened up about the emotional turmoil she endured following her shocking divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger. In her upcoming memoir, I Am Maria: My Reflections and Poems on Heartbreak, Healing and Finding Your Home, the 69-year-old journalist candidly recounts how her marriage ended after 25 years, leaving her “terrified and broken.”

Shriver filed for divorce in July 2011 after Schwarzenegger confessed during a marriage counselling session that he had fathered a secret child with their housekeeper, Mildred Baena, over a decade earlier. Their divorce, however, was not finalised until December 2021.

“It broke my heart, it broke my spirit, it broke what was left of me,” Shriver writes in the memoir, as reported by People. She adds, “Without my marriage, my parents, a job — the dam of my lifelong capital-D Denial just blew apart.” Shriver’s parents, Eunice and Sargent Shriver, had passed away in 2009 and 2011, respectively, adding to her grief.

Shriver admits she was “consumed with grief and wracked with confusion, anger, fear, sadness, and anxiety” following the bombshell revelation. She was left unsure of her identity and her place in the world, describing the period as “brutal” and “terrifying.”

The former first lady of California, however, takes a moment to praise her four children — Katherine, 35, Christina, 33, Patrick, 31, and Christopher, 27 — for showing immense “courage” during the tumultuous time. “Everything about their world and the sanctity of their home got uprooted in an instant,” she writes. “I do want to take a moment to acknowledge the grace, valor, and courage my children exhibited.”

In his 2023 Netflix documentary, Arnold, Schwarzenegger also acknowledged the pain he caused his family, saying, “I have caused enough pain for my family because of my f—k up.” He admitted that discussing the past reopens old wounds, adding, “Every time I talk about it, it opens up the wounds again.”
