Gulveer Singh wins 10,000m gold

Gulveer Singh lived up to the expectations by winning gold in the men’s 10,000m final on the opening day of the Asian Athletics Championship in Gumi, South Korea on Tuesday. Gulveer crossed the finish line in 28:38.63s to become only the third Indian man to win the 10,000m gold after Hari Chand (1975) and G Lakhsmanan (2017). Gulveer along with fellow Indian Sawan Barwal, who finished fourth with a time of 28:50.53s, were part of the five-member pack led by Bahrain’s Kibichi Rop. It was Gulveer’s all out effort in the final lap that brought home India’s first gold at the continental championship. At the 2023 edition, Gulveer had finished fifth in the men’s 10,000m and won bronze in the 5,000m. Japan’s Mebuki Suzuki (28:43.84s) and Bahrain’s Albert Kibichi Rop (28:46.82s) finished second and third, respectively. Gulveer had already achieved the World Championships qualification in 5000m. India’s long-distance runner Gulveer Singh has once again rewritten history, breaking his own national record in the men’s 10,000m event. Competing at the Ten competition in the USA, Gulveer clocked an impressive 27:00.22s, surpassing his previous best by a remarkable 14 seconds. He finished sixth in the race but came agonizingly close to securing a spot at the World Championships, missing the qualification mark of 27:00.00s by just 22 milliseconds. A streak of record-breaking performances This is not the first time the 25-year-old has rewritten the history books. India’s long-distance runner Gulveer Singh rewrote the national record for 10,000m on Saturday. The 26-year-old athlete smashed his own national record while winning gold in the 2024 Hachioji Long Distance meet in Japan. Gulveer clocked an incredible time of 27 minutes and 14.88 seconds. His previous national record stood at 27:41.81s which he had clocked on March 16 at The TEN event in San Juan, USA. This is not the first time Gulveer has broken the national records. At the Japan athletics meet in September, he set a new benchmark in the 5,000m, clocking 13:11.82 seconds. Gulveer, who won a bronze medal at the Asian Games, clocked a time of 27.41.81 to better Surender Singh’s time of 28.02.89 by 20 seconds. Surender set the national record in 2008. The 25-year-old finished second and won the silver medal. The national record is subject to verification, though.
