Indian Open and women’s team play draw in round 9

Vantika Agrawal salvaged a draw for the Indian women’s team while the open team stayed in sole lead as the ninth round of the 45th Chess Olympiad concluded on Friday. The Indian team decided to rest out-of-form GM D Harika against the US but on the top board, R Vaishali went down to Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova. On the second board, Divya Deshmukh settled for the peace result in an uneventful game with black against Carissa Yip. On the fourth board, Tania Sachdev was in a favorable lead but couldn’t find the final blow and shared the point with Alice Lee. On the fourth board, Tania Sachdev had almost everything going in her favor but could not find the knock-out blow when the opportunity came to share the point with Alice Lee. It was left to Vantika to equalize the score and the youngster played with a lot of heart and commitment to beat her higher-rated opponent, GM Irina Krush. The draw took India to 15 points, and they will now probably need two victories in the …

India play out first draw but stay within touching distance of gold medal

In a battle royale of prodigies, the Indian chess team played out their first draw in the tournament, this one coming against defending champions Uzbekistan in the open section of the Chess Olympiad. While three out of the four games of the match had ended in draws very early, the fourth battle, Arjun Erigaisi versus Shamsiddin Vokhidov, raged on into the sixth hour and spanning 70 moves before Arjun finally offered a draw realising the futility of chasing victory. The Indian women’s team, meanwhile, also ended in a 2-2 draw with Vaishali playing on the top board and losing to Tokhirjonova Gulrukhbegim, while Vantika Agrawal took down a grandmaster Irina Krush. In the rest of the two games, there were draws for Divya Deshmukh and Tania Sachdev, after losing in the previous round while playing on the top board for India, Harika Dronavalli, chose to rest for the ninth round. In the open section, the game between Arjun and Vokhidov could have had massive ramifications for the final standings. If he had lost, Uzbekistan and …

India’s domination at Chess Olympiad: 32 games, zero defeats

By the time the end was near, Gukesh had taken to prowling around his seat like he was circling a hapless prey. Iran’s Parham Maghsoodloo, Gukesh’s crestfallen opponent, was left clutching his forehead with both palms like a man who had gambled away his life’s savings guided by a hunch. When he resigned at last, the Iranian could not even bear looking Gukesh in the eyes. His heartbreak was understandable. After 25 moves in the book on the top board of the India versus Iran game in the 8th round of the Chess Olympiad, Parham had held a 10-minute advantage on the clock and had two additional pawns on the board compared to 18-year-old Gukesh, the boy who had pipped him to secure a spot at the Candidates chess tournament late last year. Iran’s Parham Maghsoodloo greets India’s Gukesh ahead of their clash on Thursday. FIDE via Michal Walusza But over the course of four moves, where he erred thrice, Maghsoodloo had managed to cause irreversible damage to his chances of beating Gukesh. The first …

How Vantika Agrawal beat a grandmaster

The Indian women’s team continued their march towards the gold medal after bringing down the mighty Georgian team in the seventh round of the Chess Olympiad. After seven rounds, India are the only team with 14 points just like the Indian team in the open section. Wednesday’s victory sees the Indian women’s team take a two-point lead over Poland, Kazakhstan and France, who are joint second in the standings if match points are considered. The star of the seventh round for India was international master Vantika Agrawal who took down grandmaster Bella Khotenashvilli to hand India the edge over Georgia. At that stage, there had been two draws on the board with the Divya Deshmukh vs Nino Batsiashvili clash and the Harika Dronavalli vs Nana Dzagnidze game ending in draws. Vaishali later defeated Lela Javakhishvili to secure a comfortable win for India in the seventh round of the Olympiad. Georgia is a traditional chess superpower. They have nine medals in total (four gold, two silver, three bronze). But it must be noted that their latest …

China avoid Gukesh vs Ding Liren, but teen wins battle

India defeated China in the seventh round of the ongoing Chess Olympiad after Gukesh took down Wei Yi on the top board in a battle that lasted almost six hours and raged on for 80 moves. Wei Yi was playing on the top board because China had prevented a Gukesh vs Ding Liren clash by resting the reigning world champion. Gukesh will take on the Chinese world champion Ding at the world chess championship in November-December this year. Gukesh’s win over Wei Yi sealed India’s victory over China in the open section after the rest of the three boards — Yangyi Yu vs Praggnanandha, Arjun Erigaisi vs Bu Xiangzhi and Wang Yue vs GM Pentala Harikrishna — saw draws. This has been a tactic of the Chinese team at the Olympiad: they have mostly won their matches by a single win with the rest of the players opting for draws. Meanwhile, India’s tactics have been completely opposite: to steamroll oppositions by playing for victory on every board. China’s decision to rest Ding Liren was understandable: …
