Kin seeks funds to bring back body of A.P. student killed in U.S. road accident

The family members of Prasanna Atluri, who was reportedly killed in an accident in New York on July 5, have sought help in raising funds for bringing back her mortal remains to her home in Mulapadu village of Ibrahimpatnam mandal in NTR district. According to information available on the fund-raising website, her cousin, Ravi Kumar Atluri, stated that Prasanna died from the injuries she sustained in a road accident. The accident occurred when a speeding vehicle reportedly hit Prasanna’s car while she and her friends were waiting at a traffic signal. Her friend was also killed in the accident, according to various news reports. Her cousin also wrote that Prasanna had recently graduated from Pace University, New York, and was attending job interviews. “Prasanna was the pillar of her family and the person everyone relied on for guidance, emotional support, and financial stability. Even while managing her own student loans, she never hesitated to help others,” he wrote. According to the website, 1,500 donations have been made so far. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav. The State government has introduced a few changes to the process of getting disability assessment done and obtaining certification under the SADAREM (Software for Assessment of Disabled for Access, Rehabilitation and Empowerment). According to a statement issued by Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav on Sunday, the reforms are aimed at reducing inconvenience to persons with disabilities while ensuring better utilisation of assessment services. From July 8, a zonal slot booking system will replace the existing State-wide slot booking process. This means that the applicants will be able to book slots for having their disabilities assessed by medical experts only in their zones and not from anywhere in the State. For this purpose, the Health Department has categorised the districts into six zones. Zone 1 will have the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam and Visakhapatnam; Zone 2: Alluri Sitharama Raju, East Godavari, Kakinada and Dr B.R. The community has historically depended on minor mineral extraction as a primary source of livelihood | Photo Credit: Representational image The Andhra Pradesh government has amended the Andhra Pradesh Minor Mineral Concession (APMMC) Rules, 1966, earmarking 33% of quarry leases for select minor minerals in favour of registered Vaddera Cooperative Societies as part of a policy aimed at promoting social equity, protecting traditional occupational rights and ensuring inclusive economic development. According to G.O. Ms. No. 126 issued by the Industries and Commerce (Mines) Department, preferential allotment of quarry leases will be extended to registered Vaddera Cooperative Societies for building stone, dimensional stone used for kerbs and cubes, morrum/gravel and ordinary earth, road metal and ballast, rough stone or boulders, and slate. The order was issued by Principal Secretary (Mines) Mukesh Kumar Meena on Tuesday. RAO The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rain in Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh on June 9 and 10, while light showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely to prevail across the State until June 12. On Tuesday, moderate to heavy rain is expected in the districts of Palnadu, Prakasam, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai and YSR Kadapa, while Markapuram and ASR districts may receive light showers. Hot and humid conditions will also prevail in other parts of the State. Thunderstorms likely in parts of A.P.; heatwave conditions to continue

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in several parts of the State on Monday and Tuesday, even as heatwave conditions are expected to persist across many districts. APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain said on Sunday that a trough extending from Karnataka to the Coastal Andhra region is likely to trigger light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Alluri Sitharama Raju, Polavaram, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai and YSR Kadapa districts. Isolated places in other districts are also likely to receive light rain with lightning. Mr. Jain advised people not to take shelter under trees, electric poles or hoardings during thunderstorms. Farmers and cattle rearers have been urged to remain vigilant and move to safer locations at the first sign of thunder or dark clouds. People have also been cautioned against going near fallen electrical wires. This is also the second highest temperature to have been recorded in the State since 2016. According to data compiled by the A.P. State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), Piduguralla’s temperatures remained below 45.5°C between the years 2016 and 2025. The town’s lowest maximum temperature was 42°C, recorded in 2016 and its highest maximum temperature during this time was 45.5°C, recorded in 2019. Piduguralla’s temperature on Thursday is also the second highest to have been recorded in the State, after Velingandla in Prakasam district which saw 48.6°C on May 2, 2016. Shops selling medicines across Tirupati downed shutters on Wednesday as chemists and drug distributors joined the nationwide bandh call given by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists, intensifying protests against unregulated e-pharmacy operations and alleged predatory pricing practices in the pharmaceutical sector. The shutdown was spearheaded by the Andhra Pradesh Chemists and Druggists Association, Tirupati District Chemists and Druggists Association and Tirupati Chemists and Druggists Association, with participation from the Balaji Pharmaceutical Distribution Association and local Chamber of Commerce representatives. Hundreds of traders and distributors marched through major commercial centres from Thyagaraja Mandapam before submitting a memorandum to the Revenue Divisional Officer at his office outlining their demands. The protesting associations accused online pharmacy platforms of operating without adequate regulatory oversight, warning that the unchecked sale of medicines online had led to repeated use of prescriptions, circulation of fake or unverifiable prescriptions and easy access to antibiotics and habit-forming drugs. Chandrababu Naidu has written to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to protect the aqua sector. He sought urgent intervention to address the crisis facing aqua farmers and shrimp exporters in Andhra Pradesh because of steep tariffs imposed by the U.S. on shrimp exports. The Chief Minister said the 50% tariff imposed by the U.S. on shrimp imports had resulted in an overall tax burden of nearly 60% on Indian exports, severely hitting Andhra Pradesh’s aqua sector. He warned that the State’s annual aqua exports, worth nearly ₹25,000 crore, could face heavy losses. Mr. Naidu said about 2.5 lakh aqua farmer families and more than 30 lakh workers dependent on the sector were at risk of losing their livelihoods. 10,453 allotted free seats in A.P. private schools in latest lottery phase

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the results of the second-phase lottery for free admissions under Section 12(1)(C) of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act for the 2026–27 academic year. In a statement issued on Tuesday (May 5, 2026), Samagra Shiksha State Project Director B. Srinivasa Rao said a total of 10,453 seats have been allotted in this phase to students from economically weaker sections in private schools. He said that 54,647 students had applied across the State, of whom 54,016 were found eligible. In the first phase, 30,075 students within a 1-km radius of schools were allotted seats.
