WFI writes to Aadhaar authority over date-of-birth changes

The Wrestling Federation of India’s fight against over-age wrestlers intensified after the federation wrote to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) seeking details on date-of-birth revisions of wrestlers. The WFI also requested the statutory government body to preserve the history to ensure Aadhaar-based age verification. In addition to this, the WFI also ordered all verified wrestlers to undergo fresh document verification while making void previously verified wrestlers. “We have written to UIDAI highlighting the multiple cases of date of birth forgery and have also requested that history of all the changes made remains intact. We have learnt that some wrestlers were approaching Bangalore centers and getting their history erased,” a WFI source told The Bridge on Thursday. The WFI had disqualified almost 500 wrestlers last week after a detailed verification pointed to inconsistencies in birth records. Around 300 wrestlers in men’s freestyle, 125 in Greco-Roman, and around 50 in women’s wrestling were disqualified after being found overage during the verification process for the U-17 National Ranking Tournament held at Gonda, Uttar Pradesh from 6-8 …

The Modi era and the remaking of governance in India

Written by: Taranjit Singh Sandhu 4 min readJun 17, 2026 06:20 AM IST First published on: Jun 17, 2026 at 06:20 AM IST History seldom moves in a straight line. Every generation confronts its own challenges and must find answers suited to its time. When India gained Independence in 1947, its leadership needed to establish democratic institutions, integrate a vast and diverse population, build an administrative framework, develop scientific capabilities, and chart a path toward economic growth despite severe resource constraints. By 2014, however, the challenge was making existing institutions more responsive, efficient, and capable of delivering meaningful outcomes to a population of 1.4 billion in an interconnected world. In many respects, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contribution has been to align governance with the aspirations of a rapidly changing India. Over the past decade, India has witnessed governance initiatives on a scale rarely seen anywhere in the world. More than 56 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened. Notably, more than half of these accounts belong to women, expanding economic opportunity and strengthening individual empowerment. …

Assam to stop Aadhaar card issuance for applicants above 18, says Himanta Biswa

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said his cabinet has decided that Aadhaar cards would not be issued to those aged over 18 years to ensure illegal immigrants don’t acquire the document. In exceptional cases, the district commissioner will have to send a proposal to the state government seeking permission for issuing the card.  The government will then decide whether the applicant is eligible for the card, the chief minister said. Aadhaar cards will continue to be issued to people from the Tea Tribe community, the Scheduled Tribes, the Scheduled Castes and the differently abled. One recent case highlights the complexity of the issue: a 36-year-old Bangladeshi woman who was deported twice within the last year, first by the Mumbai police and then by the Pimpri-Chinchwad police. During the investigation, officers recovered two Aadhaar cards from her possession. Both featured her photograph, but with different names: Mala Vitthal Davkhar and Fatima Fahimuddin. From tourist visa to illegal resident A subsequent police probe revealed that Fatima initially travelled from Bangladesh to India on a tourist visa in July 2019, crossing the international border by road through West Bengal. She returned to Bangladesh in October 2019. However, she re-entered …

Ladakh finally gets separate identity in Aadhaar records, `J-K` tag removed

Ladakh finally gets separate identity in Aadhaar records, `J-K` tag removed

Nearly seven years after Ladakh was carved out as a separate Union Territory in 2019, residents have finally received a key administrative update in their Aadhaar records, reported the PTI. Earlier, Aadhaar cards still showed “Jammu and Kashmir” in the state field, even though Ladakh had been officially separated. This mismatch continued for a long time and remained a matter of concern for many residents. This inconsistency created confusion and difficulties for residents while using Aadhaar for identity verification and accessing various government as well as private services. In several cases, it also led to delays in documentation and verification processes, causing inconvenience in day-to-day transactions. Government intervention and coordination with UIDAI The issue was taken up by the newly appointed Ladakh Lt Governor VK Saxena, after which the Union Territory administration approached UIDAI to resolve the matter on a priority basis. Following this, a centralised correction mechanism was developed. Instead of requiring individuals to visit Aadhaar centres one by one, the update was carried out using Ladakh-specific PIN codes. These were verified in coordination …
