The inhuman torture meted out to First Year freshers at the Kottayam Govt Nursing College by five senior students in the guise of ragging, is not only a horrendous crime but a sin, a blot on humanity. The matter could have been kept under wraps by the culprits and their patrons, had a video of the despicable act not made the rounds. When I was shown the video, the blood-curdling screams of the victims moved me, to say the least. The prohibition of the Ragging Act has been in force in India since 2011. It was enacted to curb the menace of ragging in all educational institutions. The punishment for ragging includes imprisonment for up to two years and a fine of up to Rs 10,000 or both. Students, at the time of admission, are supposed to submit affidavits promising not to resort to ragging.  In Kottayam district of Kerala, the acts of ragging took place inside the Govt Nursing College men’s hostel. Jaishankar has told Parliament that India “was engaging with the US” to ensure that Indian deportees are not mistreated during flights. The minister said that shackling and handcuffing deportees were part of  “the SOP (standard operating procedure) for deportation used by the American Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)”  and this has been going on since 2012. He reeled out year-wise statistics to say that 14,877 illegal Indian migrants have been deported by the US since 2009. Jaishankar said the core issue relates to gangs of “agents” operating to carry out illegal migration of Indians to the US. He stayed for only two hours at the Maha Kumbh, performed prayers for Maa Ganga as per Vedic rites and returned to Delhi quickly, in order to avoid any inconvenience to lakhs of devotees who had gone to Prayagraj. On his return, Modi went on X tweeting, “I feel unlimited peace and satisfaction on getting the blessings of Maa Ganga, I prayed for the welfare, prosperity, happiness and better health of my countrymen”.
