AAP to contest 2028 MP assembly polls on its own strength

The Aam Aadmi Party, which is trying to find its footing in Madhya Pradesh’s bipolar politics dominated by the BJP and Congress, on Tuesday said it will contest the 2028 assembly elections on its own without forging any alliance. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. (ANI) (HT_PRINT) Jai Bhagwan Upkar, co-incharge of the AAP’s state organisation, told reporters in Indore that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party is preparing to contest all assembly seats. “We will contest the elections with full strength. We will not form an electoral alliance with any party,” he added. Upkar said the morale of AAP workers was affected during the 2023 assembly elections by the imprisonment of top leaders in allegedly false cases. “Party workers are being reorganised in view of the next assembly elections,” he added. Another AAP functionary said the party had fielded candidates in 60 seats in the last assembly elections. However, deposits of contestants were forfeited in most seats. Politics in Madhya Pradesh has traditionally been bipolar, with either the BJP or Congress in power. Also Read | Arvind Kejriwal, Manish …

‘Far-fetched, highly misconceived’: Delhi HC rejects petition to deregister AAP

The Delhi high court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking deregistration of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over allegations that its leaders, including party convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, acted contrary to constitutional principles through their conduct during proceedings before Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma in the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) plea challenging the trial court’s discharge order in the excise policy case. The bench clarified that a political party cannot be deregistered merely on allegations. (Representative Image/iStock) A bench comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that the grounds cited by petitioner Satish Aggarwal for seeking deregistration– alleging that its members, through their conduct failed to bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India– were “not only misplaced, but also far-fetched and highly misconceived.” “The counsel for the petitioner has strenuously urged the court that the manner in which respondents number 4 (Arvind Kejriwal), 5 (Manish Sisodia) and 6 (Durgesh Pathak) have conducted in the proceedings of the criminal revision petition will amount to undermining the authority, majesty …

CBI books agency that ran night shelters in Delhi; paid salaries to bogus employees

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case into the alleged irregularities in the operation and management of night shelters in the national Capital run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) in 2023. Multiple individuals, CBI said, were engaged in other independent professions or businesses or employed elsewhere. (HT file photo) A preliminary enquiry in the matter has revealed that the shelter management authority (SMA), which was responsible for deploying manpower including supervisors, caretakers (for three shifts), sweepers and women security guards (for women shelters) and relievers for all staff, engaged bogus employees who never worked at shelters, manipulated their attendance and credit salaries in their accounts. The agency has named Suhail Khan, president of Sofia Educational and Welfare Society – the SMA awarded the work for running the night shelters, two other private individuals – Amir and Sonu Kushwaha, and unknown public servants in its first information report (FIR) filed on April 27, which became public recently. The irregularities were being examined by the federal agency since May last year as …

NEET exam cancellation Students may need to protests, says Kejriwal

NEET exam cancellation Students may need to protests, says Kejriwal

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said students affected by the cancellation of the NEET exam will have to resort to mass protests as the government only understands the language of agitation. The National Testing Agency on Tuesday cancelled the NEET (UG) 2026 exam conducted on May 3 amid allegations of paper leak, with the government asking the CBI to carry out a comprehensive inquiry into the “irregularities”. Kejriwal, in a press conference, alleged “political patronage” in paper leaks, saying the NEET question paper was leaked four times in the past nine years and none of the accused were punished. “I sympathise with all the students affected by the cancellation of the NEET paper. I know how hard students work for such exams. Coaching is expensive and many families even pawn their jewellery to arrange money,” he said. Calling paper leaks the “biggest betrayal” with the students, the former Delhi chief minister said, “Those who can not prevent paper leak, how would they run the government. It`s a case of complete …

On February 27, the trial court discharged Kejriwal, Sisodia and 21 others. (PTI photo) A bench headed by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said it was still awaiting consent from certain individuals to represent them and would pass the order on Monday. “Now we have only three people who are not present. I am awaiting consent of some persons who will be representing. So we will list it on Monday and by Monday we will have an amicus,” the judge said. On February 27, the trial court discharged Kejriwal, Sisodia and 21 others, holding that the CBI’s material did not even disclose a prima facie case, prompting the …

Presence is not power: Anish Gawande and the politics of being seen | Eye News

At the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, under a Bombay sky that holds contradiction without collapse, I sat in conversation with Anish Gawande about my memoir (Tell My Mother I Like Boys, 2025). Days later, in Delhi, across from the long, listening shadow of Qutub Minar, we did it again. Two gay men speaking not from the edges of a Pride March but from the centre of a public forum, addressing rooms not designed for us but willing, for that evening, to hold us. There was pride, curiosity, even care. But there was also distance — a civility that listened without fully absorbing. What we represented remained rare. Not routine, not replicated, not yet recognised as ordinary. We were not the system. We were the signal. Anish understands this instinctively, and it shapes how he occupies space. He is not a politician of volume but of calibration. He thinks before he speaks, edits before he offers, and carries into public discourse a discipline that is increasingly rare. On panels, he does not chase noise; he constructs …
