India emerged as the most successful nation at the ISSF Junior World Championship 2026 in Suhl, Germany, finishing on top of the medal standings with an impressive haul of 24 medals. The Indian contingent ended its campaign with seven gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals, underlining the country’s growing depth in junior shooting across rifle and pistol disciplines. India scripted history at the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics, securing a record-breaking haul of 20 medals and achieving their highest-ever sixth place on the medal tally in Japan on Tuesday. A tally of 9 Gold, 7 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals helped India to overtake their previous best finish of 9th place from the 2022 Brazil Deaflympics. The shooters carried the Indian contingent in Tokyo, winning 80 per cent of the overall medals for the nation, having won 16 medals – 7 Gold, 6 Silver, 3 Bronze. India’s Pranjali Prashant Dhumal added another title to her standout campaign at the Deaflympics 2025 in Tokyo, winning the women’s 25m pistol gold on Monday. The victory marked her third medal of the Games, following gold in the mixed pistol event with Abhinav Deshwal and silver in the women’s 10m air pistol. She entered the final as the top qualifier after setting a new qualification world record and Deaflympics record with a score of 573 out of 600. Indian shooters continued their domination at the 2025 Deaflympics, as Abhinav Deshwal bagged India’s sixth shooting gold in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday. He clinched the 25m Sports Pistol gold medal after shooting 44/50 hits in the final, edging past Lee Seung Hwa (43) of South Korea by a single hit. This was Abhinav’s third medal from this edition and second in the Individual event, adding to his silver medal from the 10m Air pistol event. Earlier, he also equalled the World Record in the qualification round after shooting 575 to finish on top ahead of fellow compatriot, Chetan Sapkal (573). Chetan, however, could not make a podium finish in the final, finishing fifth with 27/35 hits. Abhinav Deshwal and Pranjali Prashant Dhumal teamed up to clinch the gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol event at the 25th Deaflympics in Tokyo on Wednesday. The Indian pair registered a dominating 16-6 win over Ya-Ju Kao and Ming-Jui Hsu of Chinese Taipei. In the second event of the day, Kushagra Singh Rajawat won bronze in the 50m Rifle Prone event. So far, only the Indian shooters have won medals in Tokyo, winning a total of 11 medals. Abhinav and Pranjali maintained their commanding position from the start of the gold medal match and never gave their opponents any chance for a comeback. India has a plethora of shooters. A lot of them are world class. Several are teenagers and it isn’t uncommon to see some register astonishing scores. But what is unheard of is a hearing impaired shooter giving able-bodied competitors a run for their money. That is the journey which 18-year-old Abhinav Deshwal is charting. Representing the host state Uttarakhand at the 2025 National Games, Abhinav finished just outside the podium in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, losing the bronze medal in a play-off. Days before, the 18-year-old had also finished 15th in the men’s 10m air pistol qualification round with a score of 574. And that was impressive given that Jonatan Gavin, who eventually won gold, shot 578 to nab the eighth and final qualification spot. Early days Abhinav was born prematurely and soon contact meningitis – an infection of the membranes which cover the brain and spinal cord. The second edition of the 2024 World Deaf Shooting Championship, held at Hanover, ended on Sunday night, with India topping the medal tally with 20 medals. Two teenage Indians, Anuya Prasad and Abhinav Deshwal, were awarded for their performances at the event. Anuya Prasad, aged just 16, won gold in the 10-metre air pistol event, as Abhinav Deshwal, 17, won five medals in total, silver in the 10-metre air pistol, silver in the 10-metre air pistol team, gold in 25-metre pistol and 25-meter standard pistol, silver in the 10-metre in air pistol mixed competition. The two Indian shooters were the youngest to feature in the competition and the organising committee felicitated them on the back of their impressive performances. Henrion from the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, and Timo Kruckenmeyer from the Deaf Sports Association of Lower Saxony presented the two with a Nana figure, a well-known sculpture from Hanover. India’s Mahit Sandhu continued to shine at the World Deaf Shooting Championships in Hanover, Germany, as she won the gold medal in the 50m rifle-prone women’s final on Wednesday. Mahit won the gold medal with a world record score of 247.4. Hungary’s Mira Zsuzsanna (245.2) and Yulia Yevtushenko (224.5) of Ukraine won the silver and bronze medals. From the word go, Mahit stayed ahead as she scored 51.1 after the first series with four 10-plus scores and a 9.8, with Mira scoring 50.6. In the second series, Mahit took her tally to 102.5, shooting four 10-plus scores. In the remaining 14 shots, she did not lose her focus as she hit 13 ten-plus scores.
