On Thursday morning, Sheetal Devi sealed her spot in the Indian junior team for Asia Cup 2025 Stage 3 to be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from December 10 to 15, breaking new ground once more. It would be the first time that the newly-crowned Para Archery World Champion would be playing in an able-bodied tournament. The 18-year-old para archer spoke with her parents Mann Singh and Shakti Devi and brother Ajay Kumar at Loidhar village in Kishtwar over phone, remembering the times she failed to go past the trials for able-bodied events in the past. Devi finished third in the trials in Sonepat behind Tejal Rajendra Salve and Vaidehi Jadhav, and forms the Indian team along with fourth-placed Dnyaneshwari Gadadhe. “I had competed in the able-bodied trials in 2023 as well as earlier this year once but could not get past the qualification stage. Sheetal Devi becomes first Indian woman Para Archer to qualify for able-bodied Event

Paralympic medallist, 17-year-old Sheetal Devi from Jammu and Kashmir, has become the first Indian woman para archer to qualify for an able-bodied international competition. Sheetal earned her place in India’s junior women’s compound team for the upcoming Asia Cup Stage 3, scheduled to be held in Jeddah later this year. The selection followed the Junior Selection Trials organized by the Archery Association of India at SAI NCOE Sonipat from November 3 to 6. Competing under the same conditions as other athletes, Sheetal finished third overall in the trials to confirm her selection. She scored a total of 703 points in the qualification rounds, 352 in Round 1 and 351 in Round 2, matching top scorer Tejal Rajendra Salve. In the combined rankings, Tejal Salve placed first, Vaidehi Hirachandra Jadhav second, and Sheetal third, securing her spot in the national squad. Sheetal Devi wins silver at able-bodied event at Khelo India National Meet 2024

17-year-old compound archer Sheetal Devi won a silver medal in the able-bodied individual compound archery event final at the 2024 Khelo India National Meet at the DDA Yamuna Sports Complex in New Delhi, on Wednesday. She lost out to Haryana’s Ekta Rani with a score of 138-140 in the final. Sheetal, an archer without arms who used her legs to shoot, had previously won two gold and a silver at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Para Games and was awarded the Arjuna award in recognition of her achievement. She also won silver in the open women’s compound archery event at the World Archery Para Championships 2023 in the Czech Republic in July last year. She was the first female armless archer to win a medal at the Para World Championships. The medal also helped Sheetal obtain a quota for India for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
