Why Tamil cinema struggles to post Rs 1,000 cr hit years after Telugu cinema achieved feat | Tamil News

4 min readJun 29, 2026 05:50 PM IST Producer Ishari K Ganesh has weighed in on one of Tamil cinema’s most persistent pain points, why the industry has yet to produce a film that will cross Rs 1,000 crore at the box office, pointing to a basic infrastructure gap rather than any shortfall in content or talent. “We have only 1,000 screens in Tamil Nadu, whereas Andhra has over 4,000 screens. That’s why they can cross Rs 1,000 crore (at the box office),” Ganesh in a media interaction on Sunday. The remark touches on a frustration that has built up in Tamil film circles as Telugu and Kannada cinema have each produced multiple films crossing the Rs 1,000 crore mark in recent years, while Tamil cinema’s biggest hit by some distance. 2.0, the Shankar directed Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar film often counted among Tamil cinema’s biggest spectacles, tops out at Rs 691 crore worldwide, the closest any predominantly Tamil production has come to the kind of numbers Telugu and Kannada cinema have managed with films …

The one thing Drogba never achieved. Pepe did it in the 64th minute.

5 min readJun 26, 2026 08:33 AM IST In a dressing room in Omdurman, Sudan, in 2005, Didier Drogba gathered his teammates and addressed a nation. Ivory Coast had just beaten Sudan to qualify for their first World Cup. What he said next had nothing to do with football. “Men and women of Ivory Coast. From the north, south, centre, and west, we proved today that all Ivorians can coexist and play together with a shared aim. We promised you that the celebrations would unite the people — today we beg you on our knees. The one country in Africa with so many riches must not descend into war. Please lay down your weapons and hold elections. We want to have fun, so stop firing your guns.” An invisible frontier had divided the country between the government of Laurent Gbagbo in the south and the New Forces rebels in the north. Thousands had been killed. Drogba had grown up inside that fracture. His parents were pushed to the brink of bankruptcy when global cocoa and …

Both Priyanka Gandhi and Amit Shah were not present, but it led to laughter across party lines. Priyanka came in later. He said he would also want to learn that from her. “I was feeling very proud as her older brother,” he added, as he also went on to recount a story from their grandmother, …

‘Sindhu has achieved outstanding success already, but continues to stay on court…truly admirable at this age’ – Chinese All England champ Wang Zhi Yi | Badminton News

2 min readApr 10, 2026 05:35 PM IST Chinese All England champ Wang Zhi Yi has stolen a 4-3 head to head lead over PV Sindhu after defeating her at the Badminton Asia Championships. But despite the 21-8 scoreline in the second set, Zhi Yi was quick to acknowledge the greatness of the Indian, who has been denying a bunch of to players World Championships medals since 2013. In a dozen years, Sindhu has beaten 2012 Olympic champion Li Xuerui, Wang Yihan, 2021 Olympic champ Chen Yufei multiple times at the World Championships as well as denying He Bingjiao the Tokyo Olympic medal. She extended her streak to 12 years when she beat World No 2 Zhi Yi last year at Copenhagen. And the World No 12 continues to keep going at the world stage, a fact acknowledged by her Chinese opponents. “Sindhu is a highly accomplished veteran. For a female athlete at her age still competing at this level is truly admirable. She has already achieved outstanding success. And won many major titles. Yet …

‘Ye ohda, shauhrat, pyar — apne aap nahi mila hai’: When Priyanka Chopra said she achieved stardom by standing on many shoulders; how to practice humility | Lifestyle News

4 min readNew DelhiMar 3, 2026 12:00 AM IST It’s not often that celebrities strip away the glitter and speak with raw honesty. But when Priyanka Chopra entered an interview room one weary morning—running on four cups of coffee and no sleep—she offered a perspective not commonly found in successful people. “Main koshish karti hoon ki jo main hoon, usi tarah se main room ko enter karoon. Main kal soyi hi nahin. Raat ko chaar coffee pee chuki hoon. Lekin mera kaam hai tumse ye interview karna. Aur main tumhein 100% doongi kyunki ye tumhara mauka hai. Kyunki main tired hoon, I wouldn’t take that away from you.” (Translation: I try to enter the room, as per my feelings. Man, I didn’t even sleep last night. I’ve already had four coffees. But my job is to do this interview with you. And I will give you 100%, because this is your chance. Just because I’m tired, I wouldn’t take that away from you.) Despite her exhaustion, Priyanka reminded us that kindness, respect, and humility aren’t …

‘Great series, we achieved our aim of being more aggressive in T20Is’

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur on Friday said the Women in Blue achieved their objective of adopting a more aggressive approach during the series win over Sri Lanka, keeping an eye on next year’s T20 World Cup. India defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third WT20I to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Having already clinched their maiden ODI World Cup last month, India have now shifted focus to the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5 next year. “It was a great series for all of us. That’s what we discussed after the World Cup that we have to raise our standard and be more aggressive in T20s because the World Cup is coming up so very happy with our overall performances.” Harmanpreet said at the post-match presentation. The skipper singled out the bowling unit for praise, crediting them for consistently restricting Sri Lanka to modest totals throughout the series. “I think the contribution from our bowlers (has been a …

Even Rajinikanth and Shah Rukh Khan couldn’t recreate the magic Sreenivasan once achieved in Malayalam with Mammootty | Malayalam News

It’s not easy to explain through words what Sreenivasan’s brilliance was, either as a screenwriter-filmmaker or as an actor. One can only understand its true extent by experiencing his work. However, it can definitely be said that one of the factors that made his movies and performances dear to Malayalees was their ordinariness. Much like the man himself, his characters were also raw and unfiltered. If any of his characters appeared to be wearing a mask, he ensured they were unmasked before the silver screen went blank. He popped the bubbles surrounding people, provoked the egos that defined them, and exposed their affectations like nothing else. Yet, there was an extreme sincerity at the core of his words and works. In fact, even Rajinikanth and Shah Rukh Khan couldn’t recreate the magic that Sreenivasan achieved once when they remade one of his films in their respective languages. Even though these movies were helmed by the most prolific filmmakers in both industries, they failed to replicate the success of the Malayalam original. Must Read | Sreenivasan: …
