Farmer allegedly consumes poison during land acquisition protest in Channarayapatna

The farmer, identified as Venkatesh, was undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru. The protest, led by a group of farmers whose lands have been notified for acquisition under the third phase of an industrial project by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), has been ongoing for over 1,000 days. The KIADB has notified 1,777 acres for acquisition. Since the notification was issued, farmers have been staging an indefinite sit-in, opposing the project. During the last Assembly elections, the protestors threatened to boycott the polls, prompting the government to promise to cancel the project, but it remained unfulfilled. On Thursday morning, when the farmers left the protest site intending to meet the district in-charge Minister K.H. Muniyappa at his residence in Sanjay Nagar, police intercepted and stopped two buses transporting over 100 farmers. Farmer leader Anjaneya Reddy, speaking to The Hindu, said that upon …

IBM CompletesHashiCorp Acquisition for $6.4 Billion, Expanding Hybrid Cloud Offerings

Image: nmann77/Adobe Stock IBM has finally completed its acquisition of San Francisco-based HashiCorp for $6.4 billion, 10 months after its announcement. The companies aim to address the growing complexity enterprises face in managing multicloud and hybrid cloud infrastructures, especially with the rise of AI-driven applications that constantly shift workloads and require rapid scaling. From today, HashiCorp’s automation tools, such as Terraform and Vault, are available with IBM’s hybrid cloud platform, allowing customers to automate infrastructure provisioning and security management across their systems. IBM said infrastructure provisioning from Terraform will enable a number of its products to run more smoothly in hybrid cloud environments. These include the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, which automates the configurations and middleware deployments of applications, and the development of IBM Z mainframe software. HashiCorp Vault, a password and encryption key management tool, can also be deployed across hybrid clouds with Red Hat’s container-based application platform OpenShift. HashiCorp will operate as a division of IBM Software rather than being brought into Red Hat, IBM’s open-source subsidiary it acquired for $34 billion …

AI Growth Outpaces Skills Acquisition in Australia

AI Growth Outpaces Skills Acquisition in Australia

Research from Google and Accenture suggests that an increasing number of Australians and businesses are using artificial intelligence, which may not come as a surprise. However, there is a significant disparity in the number of employees who feel equipped to use AI, and what C-suite executives perceive that number to be. Google polled 1,000 Australians and found that 49% used generative AI in the last year, up from 38% in 2023. This rise is accompanied by a new level of optimism. The proportion of people who believe AI will benefit them increased by 6%, and the percentage who think it will change work for the better within five years rose by 7%. Accenture surveyed 790 C-suite executives and 687 non-C-suite level employees across five Asia Pacific countries, including Australia, for its Pulse of Change report. A whopping 87% of the leaders said they planned to boost their AI investment in 2025, and 91% believe their employees are able to use the technology efficiently. Employees feel differently, though: Only 70% feel prepared to make  the most …

eBay’s new acquisition could make it easy to buy a car from anywhere

eBay’s new acquisition could make it easy to buy a car from anywhere

Caramel has a site and app that helps private parties and independent dealers sell cars by handling the paperwork, ownership transfer, financing, shipping, insurance, and more. The company has several marketplace and auction partners as well. Although eBay has hosted listings for used car sales and auctions on the site for years, it currently leaves it to the dealer to process payment and complete any paperwork. Fees such as titling charges are also handled through the seller, and you’d have to negotiate separately over things like dealer-installed accessories. Last month, online retail giant Amazon started its own “Autos” website for people to buy new vehicles from dealers (only Hyundai models to start). However, Amazon advertises that you can complete the transaction (including a vehicle trade-in) to completion and only need to pick up the car at the dealership. How eBay’s process will look is still to be determined. eBay says its agreement with Caramel was signed on January 11th, and the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of this year. IBM’s Acquisition of HashiCorp Investigated by UK Competition Authority

IBM’s Acquisition of HashiCorp Investigated by UK Competition Authority

The U.K. government is investigating whether IBM’s acquisition of cloud infrastructure firm HashiCorp will result in a “substantial lessening of competition” within markets in the country. IBM announced its intention to buy HashiCorp for $6.4 billion in April 2024 to help it support its customers’ growing AI-related demands. HashiCorp provides hybrid and multi-cloud lifecycle management products, such as infrastructure as code tool Terraform, which facilitate building and running AI applications. HashiCorp will operate as a division of IBM Software rather than being brought into Red Hat, IBM’s open-source subsidiary. It said that the deal would help its products reach a larger audience. The Competition and Markets Authority notified the two companies of an upcoming Phase 1 probe on Aug. 1, 2024, and formally launched it on Dec. 30. It will have to make a preliminary decision on whether to carry out a full-scale investigation by Feb. 25 and relevant third-parties can submit comments up to Jan. 16. IBM declined to provide additional comment. TechRepublic has reached out to HashiCorp for a response. IBM-HashiCorp deal has …
