The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay comfortably won the trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, securing support from alliance partners as well as a section of rebel AIADMK legislators. The confidence motion received support from 144 MLAs, while 22 members voted against it. Five MLAs chose to remain neutral during the proceedings. Speaker JCD Prabhakar announced the results after division-wise voting in the House. The victory strengthens Vijay’s position just days after the actor-turned-politician assumed office as chief minister following the Assembly elections. DMK stages walkout before voting The main opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a walkout ahead of the voting process, reducing the effective strength of the House during the floor test. Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin criticised the TVK government during the Assembly proceedings before leading the walkout. “We are walking out of the Assembly. Once we walk out, you will get the majority. Govern well with it,” Udhayanidhi said, while also urging the government not to politicise welfare schemes introduced by …

TN Governor accepts Stalin’s resignation, asks him to continue as caretaker CM

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar accepted the resignation of Chief Minister MK Stalin and his Council of Ministers, and requested him to continue in office as caretaker CM until alternative arrangements are made.   According to an official release issued from Lok Bhavan on Tuesday, the Governor has asked Stalin to remain in charge until a new government is sworn in, in keeping with constitutional convention. Stalin’s resignation came in the wake of a significant electoral setback for the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in the recently concluded assembly elections. Sources said the resignation letter was submitted to the Governor shortly after the results made it clear that the alliance had fallen well short of the majority mark. The DMK-led alliance managed to secure only 73 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, far below the halfway mark of 118. The DMK itself, which contested 164 constituencies, won only around 60 seats, marking a sharp decline from its previous performance and pushing the party into the Opposition. In a major personal setback, Stalin also …

BJP makes historic gains in Kerala, wins three seats

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved its best-ever performance in Kerala by winning three Assembly seats, marking a significant breakthrough in a state traditionally dominated by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), according to the IANS. The party capped its performance with a dramatic last-round victory in Kazhakootam. Former Union Minister V Muraleedharan defeated CPI(M) leader Kadakampally Surendran by a narrow margin of just 265 votes. The contest remained closely fought throughout the counting process, with multiple lead changes before Muraleedharan pulled ahead in the final round. Key victories in Nemom and Chathanoor The BJP’s gains were supported by earlier wins in Nemom and Chathanoor. In Nemom, Rajeev Chandrasekhar secured a significant victory, helping the party reclaim a seat it had previously won in 2016 through O Rajagopal, reported the IANS. The constituency had been lost in 2021 to CPI(M) leader V Sivankutty, making this result particularly notable. Meanwhile, in Chathanoor, BB Gopakumar registered the party’s first win of the election cycle by defeating CPI candidate R Rajendran. The …

The stampede occurred on September 27, 2025, during a massive event organised by Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
