Congress extends Vijay’s TVK conditional support to form ‘secular’ govt

The Congress party on Wednesday formally announced its support to actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, while making it clear that the backing would remain conditional on keeping “communal forces” away from the alliance, news agency PTI reported. A statement issued by Congress’ Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar said TVK President Vijay had officially sought the party’s support after emerging as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections. The Congress described the electoral verdict as a strong mandate for a “secular, progressive and welfare-oriented government” rooted in constitutional values. He wrote: “The release of the Jananayakan film on the internet by someone has caused shock and pain. Film associations must raise their voice against this, and the government must identify those responsible and impose severe punishment. Such crimes must not be allowed to continue in the future.” Kamal Haasan took to Facebook and wrote, “The leak of #Jananayagan is not an accident – it is the result of systemic failure. Since the beginning of his career, Prithviraj has had a clear idea of what constitutes “good cinema” and has unapologetically criticised the lack of artistic and aesthetic quality in many mainstream films. In fact, he once minced no words while discussing movies headlined by stars like ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay and Allu Arjun, opining that they were of inferior quality. “There are some issues running around in the recent past, isn’t it?” Vijay said, addressing cadres at a Women’s Day event organised by his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). “I see all of you busy fighting those allegations and getting hurt. In fact, I get hurt seeing that you get hurt. I will take care of all that. Let’s get involved in people’s problems. Don’t get hurt about that problem — it’s not worth bothering about. Be confident. Only good things will happen.” The remarks, delivered to loud applause from the audience, were Vijay’s first public comments since details of a legal dispute with his wife, Sangeetha, began circulating widely in the media and on social networks. Earlier in the day, new details emerged from a petition she filed in the district court at Chengalpattu seeking an interim order allowing her to continue residing in the couple’s home along Chennai’s East Coast Road while their divorce case is pending. Vijay did not mention the case directly during his speech. But the timing of his remarks …
