Supreme Court declines to interfere with forest clearances for Adani’s Madhya Pradesh coal block project

Supreme Court declines to interfere with forest clearances for Adani’s Madhya Pradesh coal block project

The Supreme Court on Thursday (May 21, 2026) declined to interfere with the environmental clearances granted to the Adani Group’s coal block project in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli district, pointing to the delay in challenging the approvals. A Bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe was hearing a plea filed by environmental activist Ajay Dubey challenging an April 22 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had dismissed his plea against the May 2025 environmental clearance granted to Mahan Energen Ltd., a subsidiary of Adani Power, on the ground of limitation. Questioning the delay, the Bench orally observed, “Your original application itself was filed on January 22… why was there such a delay?” Under Section 16 of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, challenges to orders passed by statutory authorities must ordinarily be filed within 30 days, with a further 60-day extension permissible upon sufficient cause being shown. ‘Serious environmental issue’ Appearing for Mr. Dubey, advocate Siddharth Gupta contended that the matter involved grave environmental concerns and that technical objections ought not to stand …

SC clears path for Adani’s JAL bid, asks NCLAT for speedy verdict

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to stay the implementation of the Adani group`s Rs 14,535-crore bid to acquire the debt-ridden Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL), but provided a safeguard by restraining the firm`s monitoring committee from taking any “major policy decisions” without prior nod of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked mining giant Vedanta Ltd, which is opposing the resolution plan, and Adani Enterprises Ltd to raise contentions and counterclaims before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), which will start final hearing on the row on April 10. The top court asked the NCLAT to decide the plea and the counter petition expeditiously by hearing them on an “out of turn basis” on the dispute over the acquisition of JAL by the Adani group. “In view of the fact that the company appeals are now listed for final hearing at the NCLAT on April 10, 2026, we see no reason to interfere with the impugned order. However, having regard to the nature …

Six U.S. Congressmen write to new Attorney General against Adani’s indictment

As many as six U.S. Congressmen have written to the newly appointed Attorney General of the United States against “questionable” decisions made by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) such as the indictment against the Adani Group in an alleged bribery scam, which “jeopardises the relationship with close ally India”. Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopolos, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmons and Brian Babin on Monday (February 10, 2025) wrote to Pamela Bondi, Attorney General of the U.S. drawing “attention to some questionable decisions made by the DOJ under the Biden administration”. In November 2024, U.S. prosecutors charged Mr. Adani with participating in a scheme to pay Indian officials over $250 million (about ₹2,100 crore) in bribes in exchange for favourable terms for solar power contracts. This was concealed from the U.S. banks and investors from whom the Adani group raised billions of dollars for the project, the prosecutors have alleged. U.S. law allows pursuing foreign corruption allegations if they involve certain links to American investors or markets. The Adani group, however, has denied the …

Adani’s 5G bet in limbo; after penalties from DoT, may surrender spectrum | Business News

The Adani Group’s telecom arm, Adani Data Networks, has been penalised by the telecom department at least twice since last year for not utilising its 5G spectrum so far and falling short of its minimum rollout obligations, The Indian Express has learnt. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sent multiple show cause notices to the company over the delay in launching connectivity services. Adani Data Networks had bought 400 Mhz spectrum in the 26 Ghz band for Rs 212 crore in the auctions held in July 2022, which was the first time 5G spectrum was auctioned. It currently holds 100 Mhz each in Gujarat and Mumbai and 50 Mhz each in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.
