Ford’s Tesla Supercharger adapters are now on sale for $200

Ford is making some changes to how it handles its EV charging accessories. Starting today, anyone that needs a NACS adapter will have to shell out $200. The adapters were co-developed by Ford and Lectron, and are rated for up to 500 amps and 1,000 volts. The adapters went through a battery of tests, including being run over by a truck and submerging them in water, to be sure they were up to the task of connecting Ford EVs to Tesla Superchargers. Starting today, anyone that needs a NACS adapter will have to shell out $200. In a blog post, Ford’s head of charging and energy service Ken Williams extended his gratitude to everyone who waited for a complimentary charger: “Every complimentary adapter reserved by our U.S. customers has been shipped. From customer reservation No. 1 in Austin, Texas, to customer reservation #139,936 in Waconia, Minnesota, we are truly grateful for those who have charged with us (and patiently waited for us).” Ford also touted the growth of its BlueOval Charging Network, which now includes …

EVgo says no to fast-charging extension cables and breakaway adapters

EVgo says no to fast-charging extension cables and breakaway adapters

Electric vehicle charging network EVgo changed its terms of service Thursday to include new language explicitly prohibiting the use of high-speed DC extension cables and breakaway adapters at the company’s stations. The terms, which go into effect March 8th, are another bump in the road for enterprising companies looking to cash in on EV charging accessories. EVgo added the following terms in bold to the Authorized Charging Adapters section of its Terms of Service: “EVgo prohibits the use of all other adapters, including break-away adapters and DC extension cords (“Unauthorized Equipment”) on EVgo’s network and Charging Stations.” The company continues to authorize “automaker-manufactured charging adapters” (such as J3400 “NACS” to CCS1) and have UL2252 certification. Another bump in the road for enterprising companies looking to cash in on EV charging accessories Tesla’s Terms of Use for its Superchargers similarly prohibit any adapter not “sold or provided by Tesla or by other automakers,” without specifically calling out specific types. EV accessory maker A2Z EV recently put up for preorder its $248 6ft-plus DC extension cord that …

Hyundai will give its EV customers free NACS adapters in early 2025

Hyundai will give its EV customers free NACS adapters in early 2025

Hyundai announced it will start distributing free CCS to Tesla NACS adapters to its EV customers in the first quarter of 2025. The adapters will enable vehicles such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 to connect to “20,000-plus” Tesla Supercharger stations. The free adapter is available to those who purchased or leased their Hyundai EVs on or before January 31st, 2025. The NACS adapter deal includes 2024 and earlier Kona Electric, Ioniq hatchback, Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 6. It also includes the 2025 Ioniq 6, 2025 Ioniq 5 N, 2025 Kona Electric, and Genesis brand EVs (a full list will be revealed next year). You can request the free adapter through the My Hyundai owner portal. Meanwhile, the 2025 Ioniq 5 with a native Tesla port will have Supercharger access as soon as it ships to customers. Tesla posted on X that it has already flipped the switch, enabling the 2025 Ioniq 5 to charge at Superchargers. Still, owners with older CCS-native models must wait for the Hyundai-approved adapters to get access. Disclaimer: We do not …

Ford offers EV owners free Tesla Supercharger adapters until July

Starting today, people who own electric vehicles from Ford can reserve an adapter that will enable them to charge at Tesla’s vastly superior Supercharger network. The company is the first to distribute adapters to customers, after announcing last year its plans to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector for its EVs. Other automakers soon followed Ford’s lead, leading to a massive shift toward Tesla’s standardized version of its proprietary charging system. The adapter, which is manufactured by Tesla and allows EVs equipped with Combined Charging System (CCS 1) outlets to use Tesla’s Superchargers, typically retails for $230. But Ford is offering the first adapter to its EV customers free of charge — at least for a while. The adapter typically retails for $230 “This will more than double our access to fast charging within the US and Canada with the addition of greater than 15,000 chargers with the Tesla Supercharger network,” Ken Williams, director of charging and energy services at Ford, told reporters. Ford said the adapters will be complimentary starting today for …
