Israel kept up strikes on south Lebanon on Sunday despite a ceasefire, Lebanese state media reported, with authorities saying two paramedics from the Hezbollah-affiliated Islamic Health Committee were killed. The first merit list of undergraduate (UG) degree courses was declared by colleges affiliated to Mumbai University on Tuesday. This year, many courses have seen a considerable dip in cut-off scores, especially traditional degree courses such as BA, BCom and BSc. City colleges have seen increased interest for new-age professional courses launched recently. At St. Xavier’s College, which is among the most popular for Arts, the first merit list cut-off for this year is 90 per cent which is a considerable drop from last year’s 92.33 percent. A similar situation has occurred at Ramnarain ruia College too, where the cut-off score for the first merit list of Arts has dropped from 92 per cent to 90 percent. Ruia College has seen a drop in cut-off score in B.Sc as well as in Biochemistry, whereas cut-off for Biotechnology has increased from 92.2 per cent to 94.6 per cent. AICTE chairman urges colleges to get affiliated with it to benefit from its expertise

Colleges should become part of the All India Council for Technical Education to benefit from its technical expertise, said its chairman T.G. Sitharam.   At a workshop for stakeholders in the city on Thursday, Mr. Sitharam said the institutions would benefit multi-fold, including ensuring students internship, scholarship and standardised world-class curriculum, he explained. The workshop was held to explain why AICTE mandated that all colleges offering BBA and BCA programmes should register with it.   Mr. Sitharam explained that the Council was only bringing under its purview BBA and BCA courses as it already oversees MCA and MBA programmes.   “We want to give the benefits of AICTE’s technical expertise to colleges running BBA and BCA – there are advantages – such as teaching and learning; we will give you standard curriculum prepared by world class faculty and industry experts. We will give scholarship; your bandwidth will expand. AICTE disburses around ₹200 crore as scholarship.
