In a notification, the Union home ministry said in November, 2024, the Nagaland government had created the district of Meluri by carving it out of Phek district, which has been declared a ‘disturbed area’ on March 30, along with seven other districts. “Therefore, in partial modification of notification number S.O. 1536 (E) dated 30th March, 2025, the district Meluri is also declared as ‘disturbed area’ under section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (28 of 1958) for a period of 6 months with affect from 1st April, 2025 unless withdrawn earlier,” the notification said. Guwahati, The Assam government on Sunday said it has extended application of the Armed Forces Act, 1958 in three districts of the state for six more months after a review of the law and order situation. Home and Political Department Secretary Debaprasad Misra in an order stated that the four districts were kept under the AFSPA since October 8 last year as “Disturbed Area” after withdrawing the act from the rest of the state. “Following the receipt of reports from various security agencies, it has been observed that the overall security situation in Assam has significantly improved, particularly over the last three and a half years, due to the sustained efforts and proactive counter-insurgency measures by the Assam Police and security forces,” it added. Thousands of women went against curfew orders and held a rally in Manipur`s Imphal East district on Monday, demanding the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 to be repealed from the state, PTI reported. As per PTI, the rally organised by local clubs and Meira Paibis in the district raised slogans and placards demanding the “removal of AFSPA from the state” and to “stop imposition of the draconian law” and “stop killing of women and children” in the northeastern state. The rally started from Konga Bazaar but was halted after 3 km by a huge contingent of security forces at Konung Mamang, just one kilometre away from the Chief Minister`s Secretariat. The protestors later returned to Kongba for a public meeting. Protestors on Thursday organised demonstrations and rallies in various parts of the Imphal valley against the re-imposition of  the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the recent killing of three women and three children in Jiribam district, news agency PTI reported. Several organisations of the Meitei community such as Meira Paibis held sit-ins against the Centre`s November 14 decision to reimpose AFSPA in areas falling under six police stations of Manipur and demanded prompt action against those Kuki-Zo-Hmar group members who were responsible for the killing of the six people of Jiribam. Hours after the Centre ordered an additional 70 companies of paramilitary forces to Manipur in the wake of a new wave of killings and protests there, the state’s ruling alliance MLAs, at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, passed a resolution Monday, urging the Centre to “review the imposition of AFSPA” in six police stations areas of the valley. The MLAs demanded “mass operations against Kuki militants responsible for” the November 11 abduction and killing of six Meitei women and children from Jiribam, and to declare them an “unlawful organisation” within seven days. The resolution stated that if these were “not implemented within the specified period, the NDA legislators will decide the future course of action in consultation with the people of the state”.
