South Asian film organisation, Tasveer, has announced the removal of Aditya Dhar‘s film Dhurandhar 2, starring Ranveer Singh, from its daily screening lineup at the newly opened Tasveer Film Centre, clarifying that screening the movie was not an endorsement of its content. Tasveer, which showcases South Asian voices through cinema, is recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, meaning films awarded at the festival can become eligible for Oscar consideration. Almost one in three respondents in a survey conducted by Pew Research – a pre-eminent Washington DC based collector of data on public perception – in India either refused to answer or didn’t know what to answer when asked what made them proud of India. With a 31% “non-response” score, India was ranked first on this count among the 25 countries for which this data was collected — a list that includes Australia, Brazil, Germany , the UK, and the US. India ranked at the bottom of the table with barely any difference between supporters of the ruling BJP and its allies (1%). If there is anyone in the film industry who has consistently spoken his mind without fear, it has to be none other than Naseeruddin Shah. Whether sharing opinions about fellow actors, films, or broader socio-political issues, Naseer has always expressed whatever is on his mind.
