How farming made Salim Kumar a ‘billionaire’ and earned even Mammootty’s praise | Malayalam News

4 min readJun 7, 2026 08:01 PM IST Legendary actor Salim Kumar, who passed away on Saturday, June 6, was known among Malayalees worldwide not just for his iconic performances but also for his off-screen persona. Besides being renowned for his unfiltered commentary on various topics, as well as his vocal political affiliation to the Congress party, he was also known for his penchant for agriculture. Fascinatingly, his affinity for farming went beyond mere verbal expressions or appearances at related events; Salim was actively involved in agriculture for a long time, even owning farmland in his native areas in Kerala. Though he didn’t hail from a farming family, he came to recognise its greatness over time, particularly through his several visits to prisons. Only in SCREEN | Salim Kumar (1969-2026): The screen titan who knew the jokes, and whom the jokes knew The philosophy behind Salim Kumar’s soil obsession Salim Kumar once remarked that, although he had visited jails often in the capacity of an artiste, he had never seen a single farmer there, perhaps …

Farmers who gave land for Parandur airport face uncertainty

In limbo: So far, nearly 1,700 acres of land has been acquired in various villages for the project. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu A few months ago, Murugan, a farmer and resident of Nagapattu, was under duress to give his agricultural land for the Parandur airport project. “I was absolutely against it. But I had to give my farmland since it was for the development of the State, and it would create lakhs of jobs. I received the compensation. But now, I’m shocked that there is nothing happening. We are staring at uncertainty, wondering why we gave the land,” he says. Many residents and farmers who gave their farmland are worried about their future, as they do not know whether the project would take off. Planned to be built at an estimated cost of ₹27,400 crore in four phases on an area of 2,172.72 hectares, the airport was announced in 2022. Demonstrations erupted soon after. Simultaneously, the government pursued the approval. In April 2025, the approval finally came. Land acquisition began, and continued till the State …

Impact of Gulf Conflict and El Nino

Impact of Gulf Conflict and El Nino

4 min readMay 22, 2026 06:16 PM IST First published on: May 22, 2026 at 06:16 PM IST India’s fertiliser problem has quietly changed character. For the first several weeks after Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz in the aftermath of the US-Israel strikes in late February, the dominant anxiety in New Delhi was physical: Would the fertilisers arrive, and in time? With the critical kharif sowing season beginning in June, the real issue is no longer whether India can source enough fertiliser but whether New Delhi can keep paying for the guarantee that it will. India’s fertiliser production declined 24.6 per cent in March 2026, the sharpest single-month contraction in recent memory, after output had expanded for three consecutive months prior. The government has committed to absorbing the cost of guaranteeing supply, and if the Gulf conflict endures, that commitment may prove open-ended in ways the fiscal budget cannot easily accommodate. With the sowing season peaking in June, allowing farm input costs to rise visibly would risk both food price inflation and a …

T.N. election: Even as parties promise host of schemes, farmers worried about future of agriculture

Paddy crop raised in a field in Kannankurichi in Salem district | Photo Credit: E. Lakshmi Narayanan A joint family, owning about two dozen acres of land in a village near Sattur of Virudhunagar district, raised maize this year. The family spent around ₹9 lakh but could earn only ₹4 lakh, suffering a loss of ₹5 lakh. “Our area is fit only for dry land farming, as there is no scope for irrigation through any river network. Of course, there is not much rain. This is why we have been raising crops such as maize, millet, or cotton, if possible. As an inter-crop, we sometimes opt for black gram,” explains an elderly member of the family.    Speaking of the economic viability of farming, the elderly person says that even though the family has got enough means to withstand the loss this year, it has decided not to carry on farming by itself hereafter, as the elders are quite sure that the younger members of the family are not keen on pursuing farming.  Published – April 14, 2026 …

Ramesh Chennithala alleges scam in software contract for primary agriculture credit societies in Kerala

Ramesh Chennithala alleges scam in software contract for primary agriculture credit societies in Kerala

Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Friday alleged that ground is being prepared in the Kerala’s Cooperation department for a major scam in connection with the development of a ‘uniform software solution’ for 4,415 primary agriculture cooperative credit society (PACS) branches in the State. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Chennithala said that the original decision to award the contract to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for ₹206 crore was cancelled and a fresh tender was invited under mysterious circumstances. The CPI(M)-led LDF government is attempting to award the work to Kannur-based Kerala Dinesh Beedi Workers’ Central Cooperative Society Ltd which has quoted ₹58 crore for providing the software solution to 280 cooperatives, he said. At that rate, equipping all 4,415 cooperative society branches would cost around ₹914 crore, resulting in a loss of ₹700 crore to the State when compared to the amount quoted by TCS, Mr. Chennithala alleged. The Cooperation department had issued orders accepting the TCS’s single tender for the work in September 2023. The financial bid was approved through a government order …
