Their demands included alternate accommodation and time to vacate. Asking them to vacate in 10 days, the civic body has issued notices to residents of over 280 houses, stating that the shanties encroached on a town-planning road. Gujarat Hardlook: Stalling Suicides At Sabarmati | Ahmedabad News

In the second week of December, a 35-year-old man called up the Jeevan Aastha Helpline (JAH) as he stood at the edge of Jamalpur Bridge spanning the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad. Sole breadwinner of the house, the man had failed to pay several installments of his bank loan. Unable to meet the financial requirements of his family, he had reached the Sabarmati riverfront, from whose waters, each year, the River Rescue Team pulls out over 200 people, most of them already dead. While walking up to the Eastern side of Sardar Bridge from Jamalpur, a signboard caught the man’s attention. The board had a message: “Suicide is not the solution to your problem”, with a phone number. The man called up the helpline number (1800-233-3330) and reached out to the senior counsellor — the last attempt at aid. “I spoke to him for more than 25 minutes. The man was in dire financial straits. He was unable to meet the monetary needs of his family and had bank officials knocking on his door to collect …

Months before Saturday’s fire at TRP, a private amusement and theme park in Rajkot, Ahmedabad, too, had seen a fire break out at TRP Mall’s gaming zones. While parts of the TRP Mall were sealed after the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) noticed violations, some were subsequently reopened after the mall owners submitted compliance reports. While both the establishments have similar names, these are run by different companies. A fire at the mall on March 23 had engulfed the fifth and sixth floors, resulting in significant damage to the property. Following this, on March 28, the AMC had sealed a paying guest facility, two game zones, including one known as the Sky Jumper Trampoline Park that was gutted in the fire, and a cinema hall, following an onsite inspection. According to the AMC, these establishments were running without requisite permission in the mall. Speaking to The Indian Express, deputy estate officer of north west zone of AMC, Hemaben Shakya, said: “One of the gaming zones in the Ahmedabad mall is still closed. I believe repair work …
