Cities need smarter, climate- planning to boost cooling benefits from green cover: IIT-Gn study | Ahmedabad News

AT TIMES, presence of greening or increase in greening is considered part of efforts towards urban cooling. The increasing trend of lawns in farmhouses or landscaping in residential buildings is seen as attempts to increase the green cover in cities. However, in a recent study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), researchers found that it is the convergence of three elements – greening, the leaf area index and photosynthetic activity. The study shows that while urban greening remains essential to reduce heat stress, cities need smarter and more climate-responsive planning to ensure that tree cover delivers maximum cooling benefits. A lawn, a palm-lined street, a park with large shade trees and a dense plantation in a narrow humid lane may all appear as “green cover”, but they can affect heat stress quite differently. The study highlights that Indian cities need integrated urban cooling strategies where shade trees, parks, roadside plantations, open spaces and ventilation corridors are planned together. In humid and dense neighbourhoods, factors such as species selection, canopy spacing, pruning, irrigation …

The interaction was part of an event organised by Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) — an autonomous nodal agency under the Centre—here on Thursday. IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka said the roundtable with about 80 CEOs and CXOs held on Wednesday gave ideas on what needs to be done to push the space sector forward. “The recommendations that emerged from the roundtable on what the industry is looking for from the government include the concern that we still do not have a truly single window system. Also, some of the current regulations, like export clearance, result in delaying the process. Sometimes, they have a time-bound dispatch for satellites. The clearances don’t come and they miss their slot. …

Market-friendly governance needed, not just business-friendly: Economist Nitin Desai calls for new way to manage priorities | Ahmedabad News

4 min readMay 30, 2026 10:16 AM IST India must move beyond the liberalisation policies of 1991 to address modern economic challenges such as geopolitical fragmentation and the politicisation of trade, economist Nitin Desai said in Ahmedabad on Friday evening. Sustained growth requires greater investment in research and development and a reduction in government dependency, Desai said. There is also a need to bolster state capacity, and to develop a decentralised, region-based strategy on agriculture that moves beyond minimum price supports for wheat and rice to embrace cooperatives and diverse crops like milk, he said. Desai, chairman of the Governing Council of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) New Delhi, was speaking on India’s manufacturing and agriculture sectors at the first Prof Y K Alagh Memorial lecture organised by the Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Research (SPIESR). In his lecture titled ‘Policy Priorities in a Changing World’, Desai spotlighted the critical stagnation in India’s manufacturing sector, and stressed on the need to transition from a business-friendly environment to a market-friendly one, and on …

The party selected Makwana for the top post, overlooking three male contenders, who were considered front runners for the top post in the city civic body. The post of mayor this time was reserved for candidates from Scheduled Caste communities. Aditya Patel has been appointed as Deputy Mayor and Varsha Vyas the Chairperson of the Standing Committee. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate (UG) medical courses, held on May 3, 2026, was cancelled by the National Testing Agency (NTA) after allegations of a paper leak on Tuesday. Hemal Mehta, a businessman whose daughter had appeared for NEET UG 2026, says re-examination of all students in the country would affect students who had not cheated. “When the paper leak happened only in some states, why are all 24 lakh students paying the price? Why is the government playing with their future? At this rate, if paper leaks are going to happen, why doesn’t the government hold three exams per year and then count the marks of the exam in which the leak didn’t take place? This is gross injustice and …
