India’s AI regulation may be built through its ecosystem

India is increasingly positioning itself as a major hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) development, infrastructure and innovation. This ambition was evident earlier this year when policymakers and industry leaders gathered in New Delhi for the India AI Impact Summit. Among the issues discussed was how countries should approach the governance of AI as these technologies become more deeply embedded in economic and social systems. AI (Photo for representational purposes only) (Unsplash) With more than 900 million internet users and a rapidly expanding digital economy, India is emerging as an important centre for AI innovation. Multinational companies are expanding engineering and data science operations in the country, while domestic technology firms are increasingly integrating AI tools into digital platforms and services. Investment in computing infrastructure, data centres and research capabilities is accelerating as demand for AI applications grows. Yet the rapid spread of AI technologies is also raising complex governance questions. Automated systems are increasingly used in decisions related to credit, employment, customer services and digital platforms. As these tools influence economic and social outcomes, policymakers …

OpenAI unveils tool to automate web tasks as AI agents take center-stage | Technology News

Generative artificial intelligence heavyweight OpenAI on Thursday previewed an AI agent that can carry out tasks on the web for users, as it seeks to enhance its chatbot amid intensifying competition. The tool, called Operator, is powered by a model that allows it to interact with on-screen buttons, menus and text fields. “This capability marks the next step in AI development, allowing models to use the same tools humans rely on daily and opening the door to a vast range of new applications,” the company said in a blog post. Operator can perform a variety of tasks, like creating to-do lists or assisting with vacation planning. It also takes user input once it decides a task is complete and seeks confirmation for some tasks, such as entering login details on a website. The tool is currently available to Pro users in the U.S. as a research preview, the Microsoft-backed startup said. Agents, which are systems that can execute actions such as making purchases and scheduling meetings without direct human intervention, are now at the forefront …

Meta challenges OpenAI’s Sora with Movie Gen video model: What is it?

Meta seems to be leaving no stone unturned in its bid to dominate the AI landscape. On Friday, the Mark Zuckerberg-led tech giant announced that it had created a new AI model named Movie Gen which can generate realistic video and audio clips in response to prompts. The company claims that it can rival some of the most capable AI video tools from the likes of OpenAI and ElevenLabs. This development comes months after OpenAI introduced its video model Sora to the world. Even though Sora is not yet out in public, demos shared by OpenAI created a frenzy on the internet especially owing to its hyperrealistic footage and motion that seemed straight out of Hollywood. What is Movie Gen? Meta’s Movie Gen generates videos with the help of text inputs and it can even edit existing footage or still images. Reportedly, the audio added to the video is also generated by AI and this is in sync with the visual. Meta’s AI model also allows users to generate videos in different aspect ratios. “Our …

Australian IT Leaders Should Adopt AI at Own Pace

Gartner representatives are urging IT leaders in Australia to avoid getting caught up in the tech vendor race to rapidly develop, deploy, and sell AI solutions. Instead, companies should carefully craft either a “steady” or “accelerated” approach to AI adoption — depending on the specific benefits they aim to achieve from the technology. Speaking at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo in Australia on Sept. 9, two distinguished executive analysts at Gartner, Mary Mesaglio and Kristian Steenstrup, explained that tech vendors were going “all out” to develop AI solutions while nearly half of CIOs are struggling to see returns on their AI investments. The Gartner analysts recommended that Australian organisations focus on their own AI race heading into 2025. But this will require having different approaches to the technology across various IT and business functions. What is the difference between a steady or accelerated approach to AI? Gartner’s analysts defined an AI-steady organisation as one that: Operates in an industry that is not disrupted by AI. Has a modest level of ambition for AI technology. Has 10 …

Intel announces AI PC developer program: Will introduce over 300 AI features throughout 2024 | Technology News

Intel on Wednesday announced two new initiatives as part of the AI PC Acceleration Program to boost the development and deployment of new AI technologies by software developers, independent software vendors (ISVs), and independent hardware vendors (IHV). According to Intel, this initiative will help the company optimise and maximise AI features on more than 100 million Intel Core Ultra-powered PCs through 2025. Under this program, Intel aims to facilitate a seamless developer experience through software, developer tools, and hardware equipped with the Intel Core Ultra processors. Intel has partnered with over 150 hardware vendors around the world and has plans to bring over 300 AI-accelerated features in 2024 on over 230 designs from 12 global original equipment manufacturers. Intel launched its Core Ultra processors with a built-in AI accelerator (NPU) last year. This NPU can natively handle sustained AI workloads while consuming low power, enhancing power efficiency and improving battery life on notebooks. Similarly, the GPU (Intel Arc) can take care of data-intensive AI computations, while the CPU can handle sequential data, complex branching, or …
