A new humanoid robot from China has set a record by running at a top speed of just over 8 miles per hour (3.6 metres per second). This makes it the fastest bipedal robot to date, although this feat was only achieved with the help of a pair of specially added trainers. Known as STAR1, the robot was developed by Robot Era, a Chinese company focused on advanced robotics. STAR1 stands at 5 feet 7 inches tall (171 cm) and weighs 143 pounds (65 kg). The test in the Gobi Desert In a demonstration video, Robot Era put two STAR1 robots to the test in the Gobi Desert, located in northwestern China. One of the robots was equipped with sneakers, while the other was not, to measure if the footwear would impact performance. Powered by high-torque motors and AI algorithms, the robot with shoes was able to navigate challenging terrains such as grass, gravel, and pavement. Apple has long been quietly acquiring artificial intelligence startups to bolster its AI capabilities across its products and services. This strategy continued strongly in 2023, with Apple purchasing up to 32 AI companies last year according to estimates from Stocklytics which sourced their data from a Statista report. This figure puts Apple well ahead of other major tech giants in terms of AI startup acquisitions. Google acquired 21 AI startups in 2023, Facebook-owner Meta purchased 18, while Microsoft trailed with 17 acquisitions according to Stocklytics’ data. Elderly Delhi Man Duped By AI-Cloned Voice, Loses Rs 50,000 In Extortion

A case has been registered and a probe is underway to track down the scammers. New Delhi: Cybercriminals in Delhi used voice cloning technology to extort money from an elderly man. The victim, Lakshmi Chand Chawla, a senior citizen residing in Yamuna Vihar, was tricked into sending Rs 50,000 to the scammers after receiving a ransom demand via WhatsApp, which included a child’s voice cloned using AI. According to the police, on October 24, Mr Chawla received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number claiming his cousin’s son had been kidnapped. To convince the victim, the criminals played a voice recording of the child, created using voice cloning technology, pleading for help. Panicked and misled by the realistic voice, Mr Chawla readily complied with the scammers’ demands, transferring Rs 50,000 via Paytm. Upon contacting the child’s parents, the truth came to light.
