Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Saturday announced a slew of welfare measures for ex-servicemen and freedom fighters, including higher marriage assistance, pensions and financial aid, while pledging a corruption-free administration. Sandhya, in her 40s, insists she completed every dose of medication prescribed for her tuberculosis (TB) treatment. Yet, as she sits crouched outside her mud house in a remote tribal hamlet near Paderu in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, her frail frame makes her appear decades older than her age. Her struggle extends beyond the disease itself. Like, many other TB patients in the State, Sandhya has been waiting for financial assistance meant to support her through treatment, exposing the consequences of delays in disbursing aid to some of the most vulnerable patients. The disease is just one of the many hardships she carries. Sandhya, who was diagnosed with pulmonary TB in December 2025, is dependent on her elder daughter, the sole breadwinner for their family of four—Sandhya and her three children. However, unlike similar schemes rolled out by several states, this one comes with a detailed set of eligibility conditions, exclusions and guidelines on how the assistance can be used. The scheme is expected to benefit about 17 lakh women in the city, according to officials. A budget allocation of Rs 5,110 crore was made for this scheme in the budget 2026-27. According to information shared by the Chief Minister’s Office, the scheme will cover eligible women between 21 and 60 years of age whose family income is up to Rs 2.50 lakh per annum. India launched ‘Operation Amistad’ under which the nation has dispatched a specialised Indian Army medical contingent and tons of relief material to assist people affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Venezuela, Caracus on Thursday. The team left from Hindon Air Force Station on Friday afternoon aboard two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft as part of Operation Amistad, the Ministry of Defence said. “The medical team from 60 Para Field Hospital departed in the afternoon of June 26 from Hindon Air Force Station and is currently en route to Venezuela aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft,” a Ministry of Defence spokesperson said, reported IANS. 41-member team to provide emergency medical care The medical contingent consists of 41 personnel, including nine medical officers.
