Aiden Markram Plays Down LSG Captaincy Talk Ahead of IPL 2027

The South African batter Aiden Markram has downplayed speculation surrounding the vacant leadership position at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2027 season. He stated that LSG has more captaincy candidates in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The leadership spot has been vacant after Rishabh Pant stepped down in May after the franchise finished at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table. Pant has been traded to Delhi Capitals (DC) in exchange for left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. While Aiden Markram have experience in leadership roles in the RPSG group’s teams in the SA20 and The Hundred and viewed as a frontrunner for the IPL leadership role. However, he confirmed that the decision rests entirely with management. “I’ve got no idea. They can decide whatever they think is best. There’s some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I’m not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it I’m sure will take it on and do a good job, but the thoughts haven’t been there just yet,” said Aiden Markram. Apart …

We are not trying to do anything different, says South Africa captain Aiden Markram ahead of semifinal against New Zealand

We are not trying to do anything different, says South Africa captain Aiden Markram ahead of semifinal against New Zealand

4 min readKolkataMar 3, 2026 09:10 PM IST There’s always a narrative around South Africa whenever it comes to ICC events with the Proteas more often than not considered the bridesmaid rather than the bride. In recent years though, the team have been tearing down that perception and painstakingly rebuilding their credibility brick by brick. If winning the World Test Championships in 2025 was the start, an unbeaten South Africa team holding aloft the T20 World Cup in 2026 could be the fairytale culmination. But to get to that ending, the Proteas still have two hurdles to cross — the first one being a high voltage semifinal against New Zealand at the iconic Eden Gardens where Aiden Markram and Co enter as firm favourites. With the Proteas the only undefeated team left in the tournament, skipper Markram was asked if the unit was under a bit of pressure in case the law of averages got to them. The 31-year-old gave a composed answer, backing the tried and tested method they have been using throughout the …

South Africa vs New Zealand: Captaincy, all-round abilities not only traits that tie Aiden Markram and Mitchell Santner together | Cricket News

South Africa vs New Zealand: Captaincy, all-round abilities not only traits that tie Aiden Markram and Mitchell Santner together | Cricket News

Two captains, who are as much as passionate about the swing of the golf club as shaping legacies on a cricket pitch, will meet at the Eden Gardens for a spot in the final. Aiden Markram, a recreational golfer since he was a child, boasts a handicap of 7.6; Mitchell Santner, a more serious one, flaunts 3.4. Like the treacherous fairways and wickedly sloping greens, the paths they traversed on a cricketing field have seen deep roughs, trees shot and fearsome bunkers. But here, they are two games away from the ultimate prize, or to borrow from golf’s lexicon, wearing the green jacket. Their brand of leadership is similar. Both retreat to the background; they are one among the men, shirking from the limelight and deflecting praise towards their teammates. Santner has played under all great modern-day leaders of his country, from the hyper-aggressive Brendon McCullum to the understatedly pragmatic Kane Williamson. Yet, he has forged an identity of his own, with elements from both his lofty predecessors. Santner’s men are attacking yet pragmatic, assertive …

Aiden Markram Steers South Africa Close to Semis

Aiden Markram Steers South Africa Close to Semis

Aiden Markram made a solid knock set up South Africa’s 9-wicket victory against West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2026, played at Narendra Modi Stadium. His unbeaten knock, along with brilliant captaincy, guides South Africa to maintain its unbeaten streak in the ongoing T20 World Cup campaign, making its qualification chances stronger South Africa climbed back to the top spot in the T20 World Cup 2026 points table. After being invited to bat first,  Brandon King and Shai Hope opened the innings for West Indies while Keshav Maharaj opened the bowling attack. Despite an aggressive start, they failed to capitalise on the innings as Rabada bagged the wicket of Shai Hope for 16 runs. Hetmyer, who came to bat, gave his wicket to Kagiso Rabada for 2 runs. With the dismissals of Brandon King for 21 runs and Roston Chase for 2 runs to Lungi Ngidi, West Indies lost four wickets to score 43 runs. With Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford at the crease, West Indies went on to score 52 runs in the powerplay. …

Aiden Markram’s 82, Lungi Ngidi’s 3/30 help South Africa thrash West Indies and put ball in India’s court

Aiden Markram’s 82, Lungi Ngidi’s 3/30 help South Africa thrash West Indies and put ball in India’s court

Nearly eight years ago, Virat Kohli had seen a talent so good that he took to Twitter and posted a simple line of praise. “Aiden Markram is a delight to watch!” he wrote in March 2018. Almost a decade later, Markram, now leading South Africa at the T20 World Cup, vindicated those words with an unbeaten captain’s innings of 82 in 46 balls that powered his side to a commanding nine-wicket win over the West Indies in Ahmedabad, that took a lot of pressure on co-hosts India, who were preparing to take on Zimbabwe in Chennai. The innings had all the ingredients of a typical Markram knock, but two shots stood out. The first came in the second over, when Romario Shepherd dug one in short. Markram did not rock back; instead, he met the bounce head-on and pulled off the front foot, sending the ball soaring into the stands behind mid-wicket for six. It was a statement shot, but not a one-off. In the fifth over, Matthew Forde tried something similar. Once again, Markram …

Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi power South Africa past West Indies; India semifinal equation simplify

3 min readUpdated: Feb 26, 2026 07:14 PM IST Aiden Markram led by example with a fiery fifty after Lungi Ngidi broke West Indies’ middle order as South Africa continued their menacing winning run with a 9-wicket win over West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday. With this result, India’s path to the semifinal has become much clearer, with net run rate not coming into play. Now, with just wins over Zimbabwe and West Indies in their last two Super 8 games, would suffice for India’s qualification to the semifinal alongside South Africa from Super 8 Group 1. South Africa made a mockery of the 177-run chase, overhauling the target in just 16.1 overs to reach four points and get very close to qualification for the semifinals. They would still need to wait for the India vs Zimbabwe game to officially qualify. Earlier, South Africa’s pacers ran through the West Indies’ batting line-up before a stirring lower-order fightback from Romario Shepherd and …

‘Drop the ego’: Aiden Markram on how South Africa toppled India in T20 World Cup Super 8s clash | Cricket News

3 min readUpdated: Feb 23, 2026 11:15 AM IST South Africa captain Aiden Markram was all praise for David Miller and Dewald Brevis and their bowlers in their stunning victory over India in the T20 World Cup Super Eights on Monday. South Africa were off to a disastrous start in the powerplay batting first in the match but that ended up being a distant memory as they ended up condemning India, heavy favourites to win the tournament, to a 76-run defeat. South Africa lost three wickets in the first four overs. However, Dewald Brevis and David Miller then turned it around for them with a 97-run stand for the fourth wicket that came in just 51 balls. “Great performance. I think first and foremost was the partnership,” said Markram after the match. “The guys were great, put that together for us, steadied the ship and kept us in the game.” Markram praised the pair and Tristan Stubbs later for the way they finished the innings. While Brevis and Miller scored 45 (29 balls) and 63 …

Aiden Markram’s redemption arc: The making of a captain at peace with himself | Cricket News

The imposingly built Aiden Markram was the last man to leave the stadium on Saturday. He lingered long after his practice was over, watching Keshav Maharaj bowl into an empty net, observing Ryan Rickelton complete his throwdowns, and until the last of the support staff had packed his luggage. His opening partner Quinton de Kock feels nothing has changed in Markram. “He is still the same. Maybe just clarity. Just clarity in his role”. Yet, Markram has changed. He seems less burdened, less self-demanding and more peaceful. Leadership was once thrust upon him; now he has acquired it and enjoys it. His long-time mentor and former South African batsman, Neil McKenzie, dwells on the characteristics that impress him. “He’s firm when he needs to be, and the boys play for him, which is really good,’’ he tells this daily. In his first stint, he was often criticised for being “too soft.” “He’s one of those quality team men, obviously been to India a lot of times, got a lot of experience behind him. Seems to …

Why does Lakshmipathy Balaji think South Africa will open bowling with Aiden Markram vs India despite having fast bowling options? | Cricket News

Why does Lakshmipathy Balaji think South Africa will open bowling with Aiden Markram vs India despite having fast bowling options? | Cricket News

2 min readUpdated: Feb 20, 2026 11:36 PM IST With the absence of Sanju Samson, India is stuck in a conundrum with three left-handers at the top in Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma. Although South Africa does not have a specialist off-spinner on their side, Aiden Markram has rolled over his arm a few times in the past and has a knack for picking wickets. Former Indian cricketer Lakshmipathy Balaji predicted that skipper Markram would open the bowling with him and said both Abhishek and Tilak could lack the conviction to face Markram. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW VIDEO “Markram will definitely open the bowling with three left-handers in India’s top three. And except Ishan Kishan, the other two are coming in without runs under their belt. They could lack the conviction to play a sweep or use their feet,” said Balaji in the YouTube channel of Subramaniam Badrinath. Adding to the point made by Balaji Badrinath, Suryakumar Yadav is India’s best player of spin. But he comes into bat only at No.4, so his …

Aiden Markram’s stylish 86 powers South Africa’s dominant seven-wicket win over New Zealand

Aiden Markram’s stylish 86 powers South Africa’s dominant seven-wicket win over New Zealand

From an early age, Aiden Markram had been earmarked for greatness by his coaches, Ray Jennings in particular, who told The Cricket Monthly in 2018, “I was instantly impressed, not only with Aiden’s batting but with his mannerism and attitude. You can just tell when you’ve got a special player.” Despite facing resistance at the time, Jennings backed the young right-hander and deemed him good enough to lead South Africa at the 2014 Under-19 World Cup. More than a decade later, that conviction continues to look prophetic. On Saturday, in the heavyweight T20 World Cup clash against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, Markram produced the most decisive innings of his T20I career, smashing his way to an unbeaten 86 off 44 balls to play a central role in the Proteas’ seven-wicket win. Chasing 176 for victory, the 31-year-old wasted no time asserting his dominance. He took Lockie Ferguson apart in his very first over, plundering 12 runs, the highlight a sumptuous inside-out six over cover that soared into the stands at the Narendra Modi Stadium. What …
