The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Friday revived the third phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi and NCR as air pollution levels soared. Thick smog blanketed the national capital, and its 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) stood at 371, placing it in the “very poor” category. Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology point to further air quality deterioration. In response, CAQM directed officials to immediately implement the Stage 3 restrictions to mitigate the impact. Key restrictions under GRAP Stage 3 are: Construction prohibited: All unnecessary construction and demolition work is prohibited. Education: Classrooms through fifth grade should switch to a hybrid mode, and parents can opt for online education. Image Source : AP Pedestrian wearing on Kartavya Path as air quality continues to remain severe in New Delhi Air pollution in Delhi-NCR: With pollution reaching alarming levels, the central pollution watchdog imposed restrictions under the third stage of the GRAP in Delhi-NCR on Thursday, including a ban on construction and demolition activities. The restrictions will come into force from today (Friday). The air quality in the capital remained in the “severe” category for a second consecutive day, prompting authorities to impose stringent anti-pollution measures. The decision was taken by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). Under the third stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), all inter-state buses from NCR states — except electric vehicles, CNG vehicles and BS-VI diesel buses — will be prohibited from entering Delhi, alongside a stringent ban on construction and demolition activities, suspension of mining-related activities, consideration of shifting to online classes for students up to Class 5 and daily water sprinkling on major roads. On Thursday morning, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi increased to 340. It is the third consecutive day that AQI was recorded above 300 (very poor) in the national capital. Anand Vihar and Jahangirpuri remained the most polluted with AQI at 400 while Okhla witnessed AQI 328. In the entire national capital, the AQI remained very poor on Thursday morning.  The worst effect of pollution in Delhi NCR happened to be on people’s health. Usually, people reach India Gate in the early morning for walks, exercise, and cycling, but due to rising pollution it mostly remains vacant. The number of people going out for the exercise has significantly reduced. Image Source : PTI Alarming rise in air pollution in Delhi-NCR, AQI drops to 328 | DETAILS A layer of smog engulfed the ITO area of Delhi as the Air Quality Index (AQI) drops to 295, categorised as ‘Poor’, according to the CPCB. The AQI surrounding areas of Delhi also dropped to 328, and touched ‘Very Poor.’ As cold weather settles in, pollution in all its forms is tightening its grip on Delhi, with the air quality in the city remaining in the “poor” category, though stubble burning has declined this year compared to previous years. Stations including Anand Vihar, Bawana, Dwarka, Jahangirpuri, Mundka, Narela, Patparganj, Rohini, Shadipur, Sonia Vihar and Wazirpur continue to be in red zone. According to a recent study by Professor S N Tripathi from IIT-Kanpur, Delhi’s air quality has declined in the last week, with the AQI consistently falling into the “poor” category. Image Source : AP Picture for representational purposes Air pollution: A day after Centre’s air pollution control panel for Delhi-NCR direction, the state governments in the region on Tuesday implemented the first stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) as the capital’s air quality remained poor on the third consecutive day. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 224 on Sunday after Dussehra. On Monday (October 14), the pollution level also reached 234, which falls in the ‘poor’ category. Given this, instructions have been given to implement GRAP-1 in Delhi this year as well, it is being implemented today. Along with this, many things have also been banned in the capital including a ban on burning garbage in the open, limiting the use of diesel generators and banning the use of coal or firewood in restaurants.
