NOIDA: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas has flagged multiple violations related to road dust and construction and demolition (C&D) waste management in Noida following a large-scale inspection drive carried out across the city on Friday, according to an official statement released on Saturday. During the inspections, the CAQM identified 28 instances of highly visible road dust and accumulation of C&D waste (Sunil Ghosh / HT) During the inspections, the CAQM identified 28 instances of highly visible road dust and accumulation of C&D waste at locations, including sectors 20, 21, 59, 62, 80, 82, 83, 84, 87, 88, 138, 140, 141 and 145. Air quality improvement in focus, Delhi to fast-track roll-out of real-time pollution source study | Delhi News

2 min readNew DelhiApr 23, 2026 01:01 AM IST To identify and keep a tab on the Capital’s pollution sources, the Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Wednesday directed officials to expedite the rollout of a real-time source apportionment study. The five-year-study, to be led by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D), will focus particularly on PM10 levels and is expected to strengthen evidence-based policymaking, officials said. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa chaired a meeting where the proposal for the project was presented. During the meeting, Sirsa asked departments to fast-track approvals so the study can start at the earliest, officials said. The government said the project had remained pending earlier and was later shelved. “While Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology is already undertaking work on PM2.5, there had been a prior commitment under the air pollution mitigation action plan to also take up work on PM10 in a focused manner,” officials said. According to officials, the study will move beyond periodic assessments by introducing continuous monitoring through advanced instruments and mobile units. …

Climate action could help prevent over 13.5 mn deaths due to air pollution by 2050: Study| India News

New Delhi, More than 13.5 million deaths due to air pollution could be avoided by 2050 under climate action that limits global warming to 2 degrees Celsius, mostly in low and middle-income countries, according to a new study. Climate action could help prevent over 13.5 mn deaths due to air pollution by 2050: Study Researchers, including those from The University of Texas at Austin, US, said that the amount of health benefits and how they are distributed across the countries would depend on how climate mitigation is shared globally. The analysis, published in The Lancet Global Health journal, shows that under a least-cost approach where emissions are cut wherever cheapest to do so LMICs shoulder a significant share of the mitigation effort but also reap the largest air quality benefits. However, wealthier nations bearing more of the climate mitigation effort under an ‘equity-based approach’ could result in LMICs paying less, but may avert nearly four million fewer premature deaths, because less fossil fuel reduction occurs where air pollution is the worst, the researchers said. “We …

UN expert says strengthening air quality standards critical to keeping environment healthy| India News

New Delhi, Strengthening air quality standards and ensuring strong regulation of industrial and energy emissions is critical to protecting the human right to a healthy environment, a UN expert said. UN expert says strengthening air quality standards critical to keeping environment healthy Astrid Puentes Riaño, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, recently presented a new report to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva and called on governments and businesses to address the public health and human rights crisis caused by air pollution. In a statement to PTI, Riano said that countries are increasingly recognising the human rights implications of air pollution, and India has taken steps through programmes such as its National Air Quality Index and the National Clean Air Programme. “Strengthening air quality standards, aligning them with the best available science, and ensuring strong regulation of industrial and energy emissions will be critical to protecting the human right to a healthy environment and safeguarding the health and other rights of millions of people …

‘Evicting illegal immigrants, installation of CCTV cameras…all civic issues on our agenda’: Ritu Tawde | Mumbai News

A day after getting elected as Mumbai’s 78th Mayor, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Ritu Tawde speaks with the Indian Express about how the BMC is planning to launch a crackdown on illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and also solve key civic issues like air pollution and non-uniform water supply. Mumbai got its first BJP mayor in 44 years and a mayor after a hiatus of four years. What will be some of your top priorities? In the absence of corporators, people have been going to the administration to get their work done. But often that work would be left pending. Now, after elections, people have found their rightful representatives and found someone to work here. As far as my top priorities go, first and foremost, I will launch an inquiry into illegal Bangladeshi ferrywalas (hawkers) who have encroached upon Mumbai’s footpaths. In fact, tomorrow, I have called for a review meeting here at 12 pm. Second on my agenda is the installation of CCTV cameras to ensure safety of women and children. And finally, I will take …

She also said she would maintain a neutral approach in her role and remain open to suggestions from members of the Opposition. “Instead of keeping myself confined within the mayor’s office, I will work as Mumbai’s Sevak. I have been a grassroots level party worker for the past 22 years and will continue to do so. I welcome any suggestion and objection from the opposing parties as well since our common objective should be to uplift the existing civic facilities,” Tawde told reporters after officially taking charge. Referring to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s emphasis on infrastructure development, Tawde said she would work towards sustaining the momentum of ongoing and proposed projects in the city. “Mumbai witnessed a slew of infrastructure growth post 2014 – after Devendra Fadnavis …

Air pollution in focus at citizens’ meet in Bandra-Khar

MUMBAI: An urgent need to improve the air we breathe took centre stage, perhaps for the first time in a civic election, at a citizens’ meet on Friday. Air pollution in focus at citizens’ meet in Bandra-Khar Except for the Congress-Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) alliance, most candidates from other political parties gave the programme ‘Meet Your Candidates’, organised by Action For Good Governance And Networking In India (AGNI), in Bandra west, a miss. Issues that recur during every civic election too were discussed. These were challenges relating to civic infrastructure such as the need for better roads, pavements, solid waste management, keeping open spaces free of concrete, sanitation etc. The administrative H-West ward covers Khar and Bandra and includes six electoral wards: nos 97 to 102. Each of the major political alliances has fielded a candidate from each ward. Redevelopment projects in the Bandra-Khar belt, the biggest contributor to poor air quality due to the dust they release, were discussed at length. “Developers are not adhering to the norms to ensure dust does not spread …

Air pollution India’s biggest health crisis since Covid, warn doctors

New Delhi, Air pollution is arguably the biggest public health crisis India has faced since the pandemic and will continue to worsen each year unless urgent action is taken, a UK-based Indian-origin pulmonologist warned, noting that a looming tsunami of airway disease remains largely underdiagnosed and untreated. Air pollution India’s biggest health crisis since Covid, warn doctors Speaking to PTI, multiple senior doctors practising in the UK asserted that a vast, hidden burden of undiagnosed airway disease is “building beneath the surface” and its incoming wave will exact a heavy, lasting toll on Indian citizens and its healthcare system. They linked the global rise in cardiovascular diseases over the past decade to increasing exposure to toxic emissions from urban transport, including automobiles and aircraft, particularly in cities across India, the UK and beyond, rather than obesity alone. Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday admitted that nearly 40 per cent of the pollution in Delhi is caused by the transport sector due to dependence on fossil fuels, while emphasising the urgent need for cleaner alternatives, …
