Cabinet clears ₹10,000-cr fund to shield airlines, offset jet fuel price swings

The Union cabinet has approved a ₹10,000 crore fund to shield airlines from volatility in the price of jet fuel even as it offsets losses that fuel sellers incur. The announcement comes at a time when the aviation sector has been impacted by unprecedented volatility in global ATF prices due to the West Asia crisis. (Bloomberg) The one-time budgetary support of ₹10,000 crore will allow Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to provide Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) at stable prices to Indian airlines for both domestic and international operations. “The budgetary support will be in the form of interest-free advances to OMCs through the demands for grants of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG). The support will be provided to OMCs to facilitate stable ATF pricing for airlines during the ongoing period of exceptional fuel price volatility arising from the West Asia crisis,” the government said. An IndiGo spokesperson said, “We are grateful to the Government of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the concerned authorities for announcing Aviation …

DGCA issues SOPs for airlines after WHO declares Ebola public health emergency

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for airlines to strengthen preparedness against Ebola following a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) declared by the World Health Organization (WHO).  The outbreak has been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. WHO declares Ebola outbreak as global health emergency The move comes after WHO, on May 17, 2026, classified the ongoing Ebola outbreak as a global health emergency. The advisory has prompted India’s aviation regulator to tighten surveillance and preparedness measures for international air travel. Countries at risk and precautionary measures The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has issued precautionary guidelines, identifying countries bordering the affected regions, including South Sudan, as high-risk zones for potential disease transmission. Mandatory passenger screening and declarations Airlines operating direct or indirect flights connected to Uganda and the DRC have been instructed to ensure mandatory collection of Self-Declaration Forms (SDF) from all passengers originating from or transiting through the affected countries before de-boarding in India. File photo of an Air India flight at an airshow in the United Kingdom. | Photo Credit: REUTERS Air India’s losses dragged down Singapore Airlines’ profitability in financial year 2025-26, with the Tata Group airline contributing a hit of $945.2 million to the Singapore carrier’s bottom line in the first full year since the Air India-Vistara merger. Singapore Airlines (SIA), which holds a 25.1% stake in Air India, reported a 57.4% fall in full-year net profit to $1.18 billion even as operating profit surged 39% to $2.4 billion. The financial year 2025-26 marks the first full year in which SIA absorbed the impact of Air India’s losses after acquiring its stake in the merged Air India-Vistara entity in November 2024. In a press statement on Thursday (May 14, 2026), the airline attributed the sharp decline in net profit to “the absence of a prior year one-off accounting gain, coupled with the share of full year losses from Air India”. Last year, SIA had benefited from a $1.098 billion non-cash accounting gain arising from the completion …

Why Airlines Seek Tax Cut, Pricing Change Amid Crisis

Why Airlines Seek Tax Cut, Pricing Change Amid Crisis

An airline body that represents Indian carriers IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet has sent an SOS to the government, urging changes in the pricing formula for aviation turbine fuel (ATF), or jet fuel, whose prices have shot up in the international market amid the West Asia crisis. ATF prices in India, which are linked to global prices, are due for their monthly revision early May. In a letter to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) wrote that the current “ad hoc” pricing mechanism for ATF is “creating severe imbalance in domestic and international operations and rendering airline networks unviable and unsustainable”. “The airline Industry in India is under extreme stress and are on the verge of closing down or of stopping its operations. The dire condition of the Aviation Sector has been exacerbated by the West Asia War and the exorbitant increase in the price of ATF,” the FIA wrote in the letter dated April 26, as it sought the jet fuel pricing formula to be reversed to one …

Airlines seek ATF price relief; say industry on verge of `stopping operations`

Major Indian carriers, including Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet, have warned the government that the aviation sector is under extreme financial stress and may be “on the verge of stopping operations” without urgent intervention. The concerns were raised in a letter to the civil aviation ministry by the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), which represents the three airlines. According to the PTI, the airlines said the ongoing turmoil in West Asia has pushed up global oil prices, while airspace restrictions have increased operating costs, particularly on long-haul routes. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), which accounts for nearly 40 per cent of airline operating costs, has become significantly more expensive. The FIA has urged the government to introduce a uniform fuel pricing mechanism for both domestic and international operations, similar to the earlier “crack band” system. The federation said the widening gap between crude oil and ATF prices is making airline operations financially unsustainable, with airlines facing mounting losses, the news agency reported. Warning of flight disruptions The airlines warned that any further ad hoc changes in …

The Airbus A330 aircraft (registration HB-JHK), operating as flight LX147, was carrying 228 passengers and four infants when the crew noticed the issue shortly after 1 am and immediately rejected takeoff as a precautionary measure. Following the aborted takeoff, the pilots decided to evacuate the aircraft. All passengers and crew exited using emergency evacuation slides, while those unable to use the slides were assisted with airport stairs. Six passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation and received medical attention on site. No crew members were injured in the incident. In a statement, SWISS International Airlines said it has set up a task force to manage the situation and assist passengers. “Such a situation is stressful for everyone involved.
