Last Thursday, I boarded one of the first United Airlines planes to be equipped with Starlink’s satellite Wi-Fi. As expected, the Wi-Fi was very fast and left me wondering whether this will herald the end of spotty in-flight Wi-Fi, expensive connectivity fees, or even the quaint notion that we can avoid work altogether while cruising at 30,000 feet in the air. The test plane was an Embraer E-175, a narrow-body aircraft for regional flights that can fit up to 88 passengers. The flight was short, only about 90 minutes, taking off and landing from the same gate at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Still, the mood was festive, with several of United’s top executives donning aprons to serve the passengers first-class snack boxes and plastic cups of Champagne. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating an incident involving a plane at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, which one passenger described as a rough landing that sparked flames. Nikki Valentine, who was on the PAL Airlines flight, said passengers felt a “massive rumble” upon landing Saturday night. “The cabin tilted, we saw sparks and then flames and then smoke started getting sucked into the cabin,” Valentine said Sunday. Airport spokesperson Tiffany Chase said an Air Canada Express flight operated by PAL Airlines, arriving from St. John’s, Newfoundland, experienced an incident upon landing at approximately 9:30 p.m. Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said the Bombardier Q400 plane experienced a “suspected landing gear issue” after arrival and was unable to reach the terminal. Fitzpatrick said the crew and 73 passengers were off-loaded by bus and nobody on board was injured. Google Pixel phones have been updated with the ability to keep wireless connections enabled even when airplane mode is turned on. The new feature is reportedly available on Android 13 and Pixel phones are said to be the first to receive the feature. Google previously added support for keeping Bluetooth connections enabled even when airplane mode was turned on, and the feature is now being extended to Wi-Fi connections.
