8,500 candidates appearing on runway of airstrip for home guard job in Odisha gone viral

The pay is less than ₹650 a day and the job sits at the lowest rung of policing, demanding long hours of vigil at police stations and law-and-order hotspots. Yet, such was the rush for job that the Odisha Police had to turn an airstrip into an examination hall for nearly 8,500 aspirants competing for just 183 Home Guard posts in Sambalpur district on December 16. The images have since gone viral. “When we advertised for recruiting 183 posts of home guards, little did we know that so many candidates would vie for the job. More than 10,600 candidates have applied for the job for which Standard V was the minimum qualification. We had to reject applications on ground of under-qualification and under-age,” said Bilkis Nesha, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Home-Guard), Sambalpur. Around 8,500 admit cards were issued and routed through police stations for distribution among aspirants. IAF fighter jets and transport planes, including helicopters, tested the Ganga Expressway’s emergency airstrip in Shahjahanpur on Friday afternoon(HT Photo) The Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted a successful night-time combat drill on the country’s first expressway airstrip on the Ganga Expressway in Shahjahanpur district on Friday. The exercise, carried out between 7pm and 10pm, saw fighter jets Rafale, Sukhoi, Jaguar, and Mirage-2000 conduct mock touch-and-go landings and tactical flight operations. “Multiple fighter jets carried out successful sorties as part of a night operational exercise. The drill involved precision landings, coordinated take-offs, and tactical operations by jets such as Rafale, Sukhoi, Jaguar, Mirage-2000, and M-32,” Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi told PTI. Over 250 CCTV cameras surrounded the 3.5-kilometre airstrip for additional surveillance and security. “Despite strong winds and unfavourable weather during the day, the drill was completed successfully, with the night operations proving to be smoother and more efficient,” Dwivedi said.
