Opposition slams Centre over Sonam Wangchuk’s removal

Opposition slams Centre over Sonam Wangchuk’s removal

Opposition parties on Saturday strongly criticised the Centre after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site in New Delhi and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital following a prolonged hunger strike. Leaders from several opposition parties alleged that the action amounted to suppression of peaceful protest and accused the government of avoiding dialogue over the demands raised by the protesters. Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 in support of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) agitation over alleged examination irregularities and the demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. His removal from the protest site came two days before a proposed march to Parliament scheduled for July 20, the opening day of the Monsoon Session. Akhilesh Yadav alleges BJP misuses religion and donations to fuel corruption

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav launched a scathing attack on the BJP on Tuesday, alleging that it has institutionalised corruption in the name of religion and donations, and accusing it of misleading devotees. He also said a true patriot will expose this “criminology” of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and boycott it socially and politically. In a post on X, Yadav attacked the BJP on the Ram temple donation-theft issue, saying people should understand the “criminology” of the saffron party rather than what he termed the “chronology of offerings, donations and contributions”. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister alleged that the BJP and its associates first establish covert links with devotees across the world, emotionally exploit their religious belief and collect large sums in cash as well as precious metals and gemstones. He further alleged that the donors are discouraged from seeking receipts on the pretext of verifying the quality of the donated metals, while large groups of people are mobilised to temples where further collections are made in the name of offerings and …

In SP chief whip’s resignation, Akhilesh’s balancing act in party’s Moradabad unit | Lucknow News

In a surprise move, Samajwadi Party MLA Kamal Akhtar on Tuesday resigned as the party’s chief whip in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. Speaking to mediapersons, the MLA from Kanth said he resigned from the post at the direction of party president Akhilesh Yadav. “Changes take place in every party, and the organisation keeps on happening. There is no post that is permanent. There was a direction from my leader, Akhilesh Yadav, that you no longer have to continue in this post, and new people should get the opportunity. There is no resentment. I am a worker and would continue to work as one,” Akhtar said. Akhtar was appointed chief whip in July 2024 after the then chief whip, Manoj Pandey, rebelled during the Rajya Sabha elections and submitted his resignation. However, within the party, Akhtar’s resignation as chief whip is being seen as “more than a routine organisational change”. Party leaders said the decision was rooted in the growing friction between the party’s parliamentary and organisational leadership in Moradabad, with the SP chief Akhilesh Yadav …
