India’s Sreeja Akula had a disappointing first round loss at the 2025 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in Doha, Qatar on Sunday. The highest ranked Indian women’s singles paddler lost out 11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 5-11, 2-11 after being a game up against Suthasini Sawettabut of Thailand in 33 minutes. Sreeja started the match in a composed manner and played a few good cross-table shots and efficiently used her defensive blocks to stop the aggressive game style of Suthasini to win the first game 11-9. The second game was also very closely poised, with both players keeping themsleves within the reach but in the end Sreeja lost three points in a row and lost 8-11. This reversal completely diminished Sreeja’s momentum, who could not make a comeback and lost the next three games without putting much pressure on Suthasini and dropping the match 1-4. Indian paddlers Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula faced yet another early exit in the 2025 season as they bowed out from the group stage of the ITTF World Cup in Macao, China, on Wednesday. Sreeja faced a disappointing 8-11, 6-11, 9-11, 8-11 loss in her final group match against the world no.13, Bernadette Szocs of Romania, whereas Manika lost 11-13, 8-11, 4-11, 12-10 to Bruna Takahashi of Brazil. India’s Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula had a winning start to their 2025 ITTF World Cup campaign in Macao on Monday. Drawn in Group 16 of women’s singles, Batra had a comfortable start as she took down a lower ranked Giret Maylis of France 4-0 in just 18 minutes. Batra was dominating throughout, winning the match 11-1, 11-2, 11-6, 11-4 in straight games. Meanwhile, Akula got the better off Australian Constantina Psihogios 3-1 in the women’s singles Group 9. Akula, too, was never in trouble as she won the first three sets 11-9, 11-4, 11-8 to seal the match before conceding the fourth 6-11 to wrap up the match in 24 minutes.
