AITA conducts fresh elections, holds back results due to court order

All India Tennis Association (AITA) elected a new set of office bearers on Saturday but the results were not declared officially due to an order from the Delhi High Court. The results have been submitted to the Delhi High Court in a sealed envelope. The AITA was to conduct an election at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) but there was no need for voting since the Returning Officer received only one nomination for each post. Apart from getting a new President, secretary general, and treasurer, the national tennis federation elected eight vice presidents, four joint secretaries, and 10 executive members. It has been learned that initially Rohit Rajpal and one more candidate had filed their nominations for the post of President but later India’s non-playing Davis Cup captain withdrew his candidature. Former Indian players Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja approached the Delhi High Court to seek a stay on the elections claiming that the federation is not following the sports code. The Court did not stay the elections but asked AITA and the Sports Ministry …

Delhi HC refuses to stay All India Tennis Association elections scheduled for September 28 | Tennis News

The Delhi High Court refused to grant a stay order on the All India Tennis Association (AITA) elections, set to be held on September 28 but asked for the publication of the result to be withheld. The petition brought to the court by Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja challenged the AITA’s call to hold elections and stated that they were being held while being in violation of the National Sports Development Code. The argument made by Devvarman and Raja’s counsel was that the AITA elections were being held in a ‘clandestine manner’ and that there was no mention of the election taking place on the sports body’s website. Senior counsel Rahul Mehra told the Indian Express that he also made his arguments on the violations that are allegedly being committed by the AITA. “Firstly, the age and tenure restrictions. You can’t have a member running for office who is above the age of 70. No matter the post or office and not only restricted to the President, registrar and secretary, but all elected posts who …

Former Indian tennis star Somdev Devvarman and doubles specialist Purav Raja filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, accusing the All India Tennis Association (AITA) of violating the National Sports Development Code of India (2011), reported The Tribune. The latest development in Indian tennis came just days ahead of AITA’s scheduled elections on September 28, with India’s Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal fighting for the top post along with Chintan Parikh. Somdev and Purav argued that the AITA has failed to comply with the Sports Code, a requirement mandated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The petition emphasised the importance of AITA adhering to the code, stating, “It is essential that AITA and its constituents comply fully with the Sports Code. The Ministry should ensure this compliance before allowing fresh elections, which should be held in a fair, transparent, and democratic manner.” This legal move followed growing discontent among Indian players, including the country’s No. 1 men’s singles player Sumit Nagal and Mukund Sasikumar, who have raised concerns about the functioning of …
